The only air feed for a standard MPi air intake is the pipe that comes directly from the air filter housing. The pipe you're talking about isn't related to the air filter housing. I believe the one you're talking about is for the heater as Ethel said. The only parts that will be replaced when you fit are the air filter housing (with a K&N cone or similar) and the throttle cable housing clip bit thingy.

rover really went to town with the ecu didnt they, no input for an air mass meter. >_<

when aftermarket ecu's are used does anyone use any other sensors or do they just stick with the ones they have?

The MAP sensor is actually inside the ecu case you cant see it..... the air temp sensor is in the normal filter housing and should be transfered to the bottom of the filter housing you have clipped on.

Both MAP sensor and Air temp sensor on the MPi are installed on the inlet manifold.

Rover Mems is really a kick ass system. Shame they only ever got half assed support 'because they had some cracking technology. Dunno why there's no air mass on Mems but I'd imagine it's redundant through design.

it was something thats been in my head for a while, it seems there is enough sensors to keep the engine doing its stuff, but no more then it needs, the bare minimum...is this the case?

pretty much. although the mpi has most of the sensors that you would find on other simlarly injected cars.
its a very clever bit of kit, seeing as it has to work on an extremely old engine design (that predates the mini by something like another 20+ years!), and has to cope with only 2 injectors where as proper multipoint injection systems have 1 injector per cylinder.

Just had a bit of a google, seems the air temp sensor in the manifold does the same job. Makes sense as an air mass sensor measures temperature anyway. Mems also copes with variable valve timing.
