We can safely say that ADE ADZ and ADP are standard needles for 998 HS4 + hif 38. ( all jets 0.090" )

There was an AAC fitted to my 998 HS4 ?? , as far as I'm aware it was standard, air box, pea shooter exhaust

Yep, missed that one, it was fitted to Mini 1000 models as standard.

i had an aau needle with my stg 1 kit, but then after a few roller sessions/runs i now have an ADU needle. so as said, it really depends on the car, what parts are used, wear, wht you're using it for e.t.c. so it's all pretty much tailored per person.

Well either this site as the wrong figures or you are running really lean ??

http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/

try going to 0.090 needles and entering AAC , AAU , ADU as the options, the profile of the ADU isn't much different to an AAC which is one of the standrard options on a bog standard 998 ??
Maybe the rolling road people profiled the ADU needle but seems the wrong needle to start with ?? Then again I don't know what carb or engine youve got so I could be talking testicles  :sneaky:

As far as I know the ADU was profiled originally for a HIF 38 with 0.09" jet on a 998 Metro van so there you go, you never can go by numbers.Anyway, can of worms opened and hopefully good information for people with fueling problems. I always do my own needles because it's cheaper and I can do it with basic bits and bobs without the need for expensive tuning equiptment.

Needles are profiled to be used in an engine depending on that engines fueling needs, whether it be a std 998 or an economy spec 998 or a sporting 998.
Some needles from different cars, as we have seen in above lists, can be used to advantage so its just a matter of choosing the right one for your motor's needs.

Just been looking at this topic and seems really useful. Stupid question really but how does that mintylamb thingy work. Does it tell you you need a richer mixture? How can i use this to fine tune my HS4?

We have fitted a MiniSpares stage 1 kit today with the AAU needle supplied and it runs fine with no flat spots.

Yup , AAU is a rich needle originally profiled for the MGB so should be good across the range.

You click on HS carbs at the top left then put your needle no in the first space provided at the top of the chart that pops up.
This will show you a coloured line going from left to right, the higher it climbs the richer the needle at that point along the revs which go left to right.
Put in another needle No and this shows in a different colour so as you can compare with the first one.
It isn't easy to pick a needle from that to suit your engine. But if you need more power in the upper rev range then you can choose a needle that will give more fuel there as a start, if you follow.

It depends on all kinds of things, who's Stage 1 kit it is, what year engine the kit was designed for etc. It could even be that the kit (if it was a kit) was originally desinged for a different engine spec and was moved accross from another car. You don't say what carb it is beyond being 1 1/2", as Mini Mender points out there are different needles needed for different carbs. What make is the inlet manifold? What layout and make is the exhaust and manifold? All these things make a difference. If you say what you've got then maybe someone can have a guess or you could use WinSU to choose a good needle to start from.

by the way I didn't mean anything by what I wrote above other than what it actually says, it may have come accross a little abrupt. Sorry about that.

No problem Dan. Not sure what type of inlet manifold and exhaust manifold it is... not even sure what sort of kit it is, or even if it was a kit. The seller assured me it's a stage one "kit" and is new within the last 12 months (all looks new) but apart from that I haven't got the knowledge to identify the parts.

I'm not too bothered about tuning to get extra power or BHP anyway, as long as it works well (which it seems to be doing at the moment) I'm happy with it. Haven't even been to a RR, just had the engine Crypton tuned and it sounds as sweet as a nut and drives well so I'm happy
