Hi all

I am thinking of giving my mini a complete bare metal respray but being a novice i need some help

So if was wanted to give it a good 3 or 4 coats, all in same clour, how much paint would i need to buy?

I will be using a compressor and spray gun, not rattle cans, and it will be a normal colour, no special candy flips or anything.

Any guidance would be greatfully recv !

Thanks

J

But it does depend what paint your using...

Im not sure how much you'll need if your using cellulose.

I doubt you can get hold of normal 2k anymore, as its banned.

But if your using high solids 2k then you will need about 3.5 litres, to do inside, outside, engine bay, boot.

Yep I used 3.5 Litres to do full inside and out respray, and that's in basecoat. Would probably be less for solid gloss.

The number of coats you apply can also be dictated by what paint you use...

We used Lechlar MAC 5 and that specifies 2 - 3 coats only..

At the time Panelbeaterpete was a great source of info and he recommended 3 for that spec of paint. :)

biggest tip is make sure you prep the car right in the first place, I'm a novice as well and can tell you once you get a shine any dents or blemishes in the bodywork you've missed will standout.

also you need to use etch primer on any bare metal before spraying any other primer on.

do some practise runs with the gun, the ratio of thinners to paint may need altering depending on the weather conditions..

They say prep is 90% of the final finish, and it's 100% true.

We are actually tempted to do it again, weather went a bit cold to get the best of shines, but bit of polish on it it comes up ok
