I bet it's an inch 'n five sixteenths, everything else is. Measure it across the flats.

A bit bigger, but I'm not sure. As I said socket and spanner sizes are measured flat to flat. If I remember I'll check for you tomorrow. Google for AF sockets.

Yep - roughly

1" = 25.4mm

1/16" = 1.59mm

so 33.34mm

I'm pretty sure it's the same size as the crank pulley too as I have a howge ring spanner I've used on both.

No it wasn't, I think that's the right size for an MPi though. You can get away with a 34mm but it will damage the nut and it is not a good idea to use this size if you are fitting a new aftermarket wheel with a seperate alloy hub. These usually need to be pressed on using the nut because they are a much tighter fit than the original wheel and using the wrong size socket to do that will cause much damage, mainly to your knuckles every time it slips off. 1 5/16th sockets aren't rare but you'll have to go to a proper automotive supplier to get one, Halfords don't have them. All the Mini specialists do.

How strange! What is most likely is that someone has lost or damaged the original nut in the past and substituted what would be a standard nut for that size thread. The steering wheel nut has a large flange intentionally, it's because of the need to press the wheel onto the taper when fitting it. A thin nut would be put under a lot of load doing that. It also makes for a good large area of contact with the hub and lockwasher to keep the fitting secure. You should get the proper nut on there really.

The other possibility is that someone has swapped the column for the later airbag type.

ACH6001 is the nut and 53K3480 is the lockwasher. Are you certain it doesn't have the later column as this nut won't fit if it does. Is the steering wheel original? It may be that the nut's been swapped because of clearance issues in the hub if it's aftermarket.

it had the original steering wheel on it when i got it in fact the whole car was unmolested the steering wheel nut still had a plastic nut cover over it it , it had no lockwasher all very strange dont you think? so it my be possible it has a later column

Yes that is very strange indeed. Maybe there is a very late modification to the SPi that Rover never told anyone about, it wouldn't be the first. What year is the car?
