you take serval shots at different exposures so as to get all light and dark, then got the computer to compose then and tone map it however you want so you can bring all the dark sections into light etc.
you can do it to different extents, i've gone a little overboard on this one, but I quite like it.

My attempt at a "realistic" HDR.

I think it is a bit over the top to be honest. A common problem with HDR these days is it never looks real, when the original idea of it was to increase the dynamic range of a shot to make it look more realistic and more like what the eye can see. If that's what you can see, see an optician! LOL.
The pic isn't trying to look realistic though is it? Its just meant to look different and 'cool'. Looks better than a normal picture...

I've already admitted that I've gone a bit ott on it. Not bothered if it looks realistic or not, I was just looking for a distraction from work.
I like the image i've created, its a C**p photo to start with that would still look C**p if I made it look more realistic, so I decided to go ott on it.
And I thought hdr was originally designed for computer generated images not photography anyways? maybe i'm wrong.
I like your shot.
Once the thesis is out the way i'm def. going to start doing more photography when the mini will let me have the time off repairs.

You might be correct, but in the context of photography the idea is to increase the range of light a camera sensor can see. I don't really know the full theory behind. And I thought hdr was originally designed for computer generated images not photography anyways? maybe i'm wrong.
Good luck with the photography!
