I have a bit of plastic similar to the shield liirge posted, screwed to the back of the slam panel. Had no problems so far (fingers crossed).
On my old Mini, I had absolutely no weathershield at all. It had a mesh grille although it was tightly knit mesh but obviously still not water resistant. I had no problems at all in the rain, not even in very heavy rain. I put the reliability down to regular servicing.
Check the coil connections like Jammy said and it's worth following the wires from the coil and see if they're connected straight through to another wire nearby (chances are they are). Replace this connection, a crimp connector is only a few pence and can save you a hell of a lot of grief! Even if it looks "alright" I'd replace it while you're there anyway - at least it eliminates that in the future.
Again, it's worth replacing the points, dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads and plugs every 12 months - or every 6 months if you use the car regularly in the rain. Don't spray WD40 or any other water repellant spray, because when it dries it gets sticky and attracts muck and grime which in turn can affect the connection, it is a vicious circle.
