I think the key here is that qualifications will always help getting your foot in the door, but its not always needed to be a sucsess.

I had to go back to education at the age of 22 to get a HND in Graphic Design, but only because i had NO qualifications apart from 2 GCSEs so needed something to get me in the door. Im also heavily dyslexic also had to go back to school to retrain.

Once i have my HND doors opend and i was working straight out of Uni, I got headhunted

Education, Education, Education

But having more qualifications means you're spending more time in education, so you're constantly building and improving your portfolio? It shows your work is working to a brief you've been given, which is what it would be like in the real world?

& Is there an advised University for Graphic Design?

theres a saying....well is not really a saying...but they say... a year of work is equal to 3 years of school...

which i think is true, but you need school to get to the work. so yea... a bit of a catch 22

over here there are 6 i could think of on top of my head. but that doesn't really help you...although my class of 18 were basically all from different countries.

but more schools equal more competition for jobs.

Some really nice work on there Tom!

This is the company my Dad works for,
http://www.checklandkindleysides.com/
He isn't a designer unfortunately :D Just the Head Accountant, they've designed for Boots, Bentley, Levis, Thomas Cook, Thornton and so many more, think there is a list on there somewhere..

My work experience there was really amazing, I spent a week on my own mini-project and learnt so many things, have you considered work experience?

You were lucky - checklands is a highly respected creative house - I used to freelance for them.

slightly off the subject........ but i think that in life a lot depends on your social circle, so when you go to uni you tend to become friends with people who go on to be something ie: areas of law, doctors, scientists etc

when you go into the workplace and build your way up you end up with contacts that are just in that field or mates down the pub that spend there time in the bookies.

jus a fort

My Dads Sisters Husband is David Checkland, uncle? I've got no idea.

But still, David Checkland and Jeff Kindlysides started out as just the two of them, working at home, It's amazing how they've grown to become such an impact on the design market, they now produce for clients worldwide.

David has recently retired and took a big big retirement packet with him, He showed me a car he has pre-ordered, isn't released till this November, It's a 10 valve 500bhp+ Audi with a Lamborghini Engine, It's bloody lovely.

But I mean what are you worries when you're in that position, you've worked so hard and created with your very hands this empire of creativity, It's one of thee most successful design companies worldwide now.

I hope to work for Checkland Kindlysides when I'm older, we'll see how that goes though.. lol :withstupid:.

Im a graphic designer and my Creative Director worked his way up from doing ads in the back of newspapers, now he owns his own company.
I really dont think qualifications matter at all in the design world. If your portfolio is good enough then thats all that matters.
I havent got a degree.

I work here by the way http://www.wash-design.co.uk

^^ Very nice.. come across that website before

Hiya! I'm studying typography at Reading University at the moment (graphic design). I know exactly what you're saying, having just finished my first year I'm finding it incredibly hard finding work for the summer, even with a year's experience working for a design firm (web and graphic work). Anyone?
