I wouldn't bother mate, they need to prove your using it and anyway the tv blokes aren't allowed in your house without a warrant so basically they'll knock on the door if their suspicious and then you tell them to hop it and then they'll come back with the relevant paperwork in which time you've either hidden the laptop or bought a license.

Technically they don't need a warrant, if you give them permission to enter, which of course if you didn't have a license, as you said you wouldn't do. However, obviously you wouldn't be telling someone on a public forum for all to see to hide the laptop and dodge paying the license would you

The other group of people that get hammered for this are Service peeps.....and they still have to pay while they are getting shot at in Iraq so stop whinging and get it paid!

You can use a portable/laptop in a caravan on holiday under your household TV licence because it is assumed you cannot be watching your main set at home at the same time as far as I remember...

Yeah but no ones dumb enough to let them in without one, I wouldn't let them in whether I had a license or not. Yeah it's a stupid law (as someone quite rightly pointed out above) it even made it onto the worlds dumbest laws list (along with such laws as 'a pregnant woman may urinate in a policeman's hat if needs be') I don't watch bbc or listen to them on the radio so why should I buy a license?!and before anyone says something I do actually have a license...grudgingly.

Actually I think you can cash in your Telly licence, just like your road tax, while your overseas making the news rather than watching it - strange they don't publicize it as much as the "we know where you live, licence dodgers" line.

People do get duped into letting them in, they don't ask permission and they could always see you watching teletubbies through your front window.

Another thing is when you buy a new tv they ask for your address.. So they check for a TV License.. (if you don't have one they'll go sending you letters!)

Just pay it! Its not much!

Trust me they are. I know someone who did in my first year at uni when they had a TV and no license.

I think the whole letting in thing also depends on whether they can see your tv (from outside)... because then thats grounds for them to go in...
