There is a detailing product called Tardis that all the top cleaning buffs use.

I use panel wipe on vinyl residue or failing that, tar spot remover. There are special 'decal remover' wheels, sometimes sold as 'whizzy wheels' for rotary tools that are used in body shops for removing old stickers. I've seen one used but haven't tried it myself. It seemed very fast and paint safe.

White spirit works a treat and won't damage paintwork.

Autoglym tar remover. It will also take off any glue residue on the windscreen for those who removed their tax disc holders which were stuck on.
