its better to use primer you need something for the paint to stick to there might be a chance of the paint reacting to the old paint your better off spending just that bit extra getting it primed it would be worth it in the long run....

Priming has several advantages, mainly it covers slight imperfections, and provides a neutral surface to paint on. If you spray over old paint, it can cause chemical reactions caused by different types of paint, even types of polish used previously used can cause problems, even if it's degreased thoroughly. If the paint on the car is in very good condition and free fruom rust scratches etc, you could spray a test area to make sure it's ok, and risk it. If you don't want to go to the trouble of priming/prepping, then you can apply a sealer. I use half 2k hardener, and half 2k fast thinners, and just spray it lightly over. This seals the suface, but doesn't require any prepping.

Definately definately get it primered! lol

If your going to have it sprayed... use primer.. Plus if your get the high build primer and rub it down.. its a gorgeous finish even in matt primer...

i personaly would not reprime the whole car, if the car is flatted correctly the new paint will stick (primer will not stick if its not so any paint over the primer will come off with the primer)
depending what primer you are using (a question that SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASKED) can react with whats under it, celly primer tends to react more than 2k primer.
a waste of time and money to reprime.

this is my opinion and will differ from others.

"asmith88" Just wanted to point out just in case your not aware and by the sounds of it you not, 2 k would require an air fed mask

If your gunna use celly u can buy a twin filiment organic vapour mask which is more than adequate for the the task is your car a base colour e.g. red with no metalic?

Also I would recoment taking a bit of advice from Panelbeaterpete as he is a "PAINT DOCTOR" plus i have always used primer to get a bettter finish plus all the area is then prept ready for a trace coat to see any inperfections.

"Midridge2" made no sence fella kinda contradicting your self primer is paint and you would key the original paint in order for the primer to etch its self to the original paint. So how come the primer wont etch?

Kind regards

Brad

My opinion is just that, just replying to others resonces please dont take offence "Midridge2"

i dont have a clue what sort of paint it is, but the guys a professional with a car spraying business, so he should have an air mask if needed. basically i just want to know is the paint going to flake of if the car is prepped and then just sprayed without primer.

will try to write so it makes sense.
if the original paint is rubbed down correctly then paint/primer will stick, if its not rubbed down correctly and you put primer on then you put paint over the primer the paint and primer will come off.
so just because you put primer on first it does not gaurentee that the paint/primer will not come off. did you understand that better?

just out of interest pete maybe the paint doctor because he has worked for just a few years in a paint shop but i have worked in a bodyshop for 35+ years.

this is my opinion and will differ from others.

I would use primer ive touched up my car with left over paint from the original spray and didnt use primer when doing the repairs. It just did not stick properly and came off when i washed it, tried it again with a cheap rattle can primer and has been perfect for about a month now so go for primer.

my uncle sprays my cars, never primed them, i have had no problems with paint peeling even with hot jet washes.

if it is flatted first and properly degreased (especially if there may be any silicon present) the paint will not come off ( especially if its 2 pack).
