For a quick cheap repaint just prime your repaired areas and make sure the whole show is well prepped and it will be fine.

alrite, gettin it done this weekend, not using primer, i understand that the finish wont be as good just dont want the paint flaking off, the guy owns a bodywork shop so i trust he will prep it properly.

i used to be a paint sprayer years ago, and would agree that you don't need to prime it all first, you should get the same finish if its prep'd right.
you will need to prime any bare metal or filler areas

well hopefully when you get the mini back all will be well, very good price that is also for a full respray, blow over, price of paint and materials these days is mad. As regards priming, you should only need to have primed any localised repairs, as long as the old paint is flated back properly and well degressed as previous people say then should be ok, i did this to a morris minor van many years ago when funds where low when 17 and the result was stunning, just put plenty of paint on and polished up well, won trophys and was really mint. Basically wet and dryed properly with a proper 3m block is best i find but is time consuming but well worth it!
post some pics when done.... look forward to a update! be nice to see mate

to be honnest i would be suspisous of a £180 paint job - doesnt sound like a good job at all to me, also never heard of not using primer, seams like a short cut to me

also if you dont use primer how ever well its prepaired it will never last as long as a shell taken all the way back, primed and painted like new.
