On my '97 MPi Sportpack the electric radiator cooling fan comes on after a couple of mile sdriving and stays on. I've replaced the sender thermostat and run engine with fan fuse out to see if temperature shot up (it didn't). I've read that problem can be with wiring loom but cannot get a lead on this one!
Any ideas - car runs really well otherwise.

Unless the MPI is more complex, most 'leccy fans are just wired in series with the temp switch in the radiator if so it can only really be a faulty switch or short at the switch. If it is more complicated I imagine there's a relay.

Ianmini: you are correct to suspect the wiring. If you replaced the temp sensor and the fans still come on early, then the ecu is not getting the signal from the sensor. There is always the possibility that the guage is not reading correctly but that can easily be verified using one of those thermal thermometers.
The rover solution was to chop several feet of wiring out and splice in a new piece, im sure you could cut out the wiring up to the plug and solder in some new stuff. I would first verify if the wires are indeed faulty by disconnecting the ecu connector and disconnecting the sensor plug, then hook up a multimeter or test light with a battery and see if you can get a reading from the wiring. If nothing, then you get to figure out where the wiring has failed.

Thanks - it's just getting that initial help that makes all the difference. The car had a front end shunt before I brought it so this probably explains the original cause of the fault.
