Right well... here goes

My exhaust was blowing from where the downpipe joins the manifold, halfway down the bulkhead. So we've changed the gasket and tightened everthing up. Now the car is running appallingly... idling at 3000 revs most of the time and going up and down the rev counter when left running all on it's own. Still revs with the pedal but also sounds to be misfiring and blowing, even though there are no holes.

I've checked all the sensors and vac pipes, all of which are connected. The only one which looks slightly dodgy is the one I've "painted" below ;D It's been cut off at some point and connected back on using block connectors. Doesn't look broke and has been running fine for the 11 months I've had the car.

Basically... could someone tell me what that sensor is called and also... what they think may now be wrong...

Thanks loads! carless :D

The sensor in the exhaust is the O2 sensor, a critical component to a fuel injection engine.
Is this an Mpi or SPi car? year?

Have you checked you connected all the vac hoses back up?

Yeah... basically we've not had a lot of stuff unplugged when changing the exhaust. The vac pipes behind the air filter are still plugged in, aswell as the one underneath the ECU. The black multi-plug in the manifold was unplugged whilst working but it's back in now.

The thing that's bothering me is the sensor I've talked about above.... I can't seem to find it in the Haynes and I've been told it's two different things! :ohno: lol

This is the Lambda sensor.... or O2 sensor..... if your exhaust has been blowing it prob caused the engine to think its running lean and richened the fueling cycle ..... as the Lambda sensor has now been bathed in far to much fuel the sensor is prob FUBAR so when you have solved the exhaust blowing you have now got the problem of a goosed Lambda... and thinking about it the sensor is now reporting that the engine is rich and you will be running a VERY LEAN MIXTURE.... this is REALLY BAD..... the reason the soensor has been cut and joined is EITHER its a generic sensor with no plug attached....OR the person who fitted the sensor didnt have the right tool for the job with a split in the socket for the wire to go through.... Use the right part number available from Minispares.... the sensor costs about £60 tho.... but dont run you engine till you fix it... you might melt something REALLY expensive....

As always just my opinion

It's the lambda sensor which is also known as the oxygen sensor. It monitors the oxygen content of your exhaust emissions and passes the information onto the ECU which then assesses fueling and ignition requirements.

There are four wires coming out of the back of it. Two of these wires belong to the sensor. Two belong to a heater within the unit.

By the way, have you reset your stepper motor?

And perhaps you should also check that your lost motion link is set correctly too.

Well... I don't know what to do.... i can't get the car out to anyone who knows and I can't afford a new sensor yet! lol

Hmm... might go to the scrap yard and see it they have owt...

Is the is the sensor by the way

And I just notice your in Halifax.... your about 50 mins from me if you want to hook up my fault code reader, clear all the ECU faults and set everything up after you have changed the Lambda just wizz up the A1 and we can sort it all out....

Offers their if you need

Thanks... I remember Powermadcoop coming up to yours when his stepper motor was out... he highly recommended you!

Just ordered the new lamda now and got an LCB manifold (with sensor hole) coming so I can get rid of all those stupid flange joints.

yay >_< no money lol

lol...thanks for the recomend..... by the way dont forget to put some copperslip on the Lambda threads when you install and dont contaminate or knock the lambda probe....theyy are VERY delicate as well as expensive.

Thanks... I'll bear that in mind... managed to get a sensor for £40 from our local motor factors, so the job is getting better all ready! :ohno:

Going to go outside and start stripping the exhaust off, don't get paid till Thursday so all the stuff is on order for then! lol
