Check the switch on the accel pedal as this tells the ecu when your at idle ...if its faulty you might have these symptoms....It would help if you told us the part number of your ECU and the modle and year of manufacture of your mini tho..

With that car its unlikley to have an accel switch so your problem is more likly to be TPS or map sensor related...check ALL the pipes and elbows for leaks and if they appear ok then suspect the TPS.

Ryan, here's a good place to start if you need some local help and knowledge, they're a freindly bunch always welcoming and willing to help. : http://www.ni-minis.co.uk/
My advice would be to strip as much of the intake and sensors as you feel brave enough to and just break out the WD40, give everything a good clean, remember where everthing goes put it back together and check for air leaks. No better way to spend a sunday afternoon.

Hey Mistro
No iv not had time to get it sorted yet, but still difrent people are telling me different things that cud be wrong with it. I have a feeling it could be somthin to do with the throttle valve sensor(s), after reading THIS on howstuffworks.com

hey, thanks for the reply! that does sound like what is happening, could be a bit of a mix of a couple of things then, i cant see that being the reason why it ticks over so high though! the thing i have been told to look at the most are the vacuum tubes in the engine, making sure that there is no oil or any other fluids in them! did blackbelt say what was causing problems with his?

Blackbelt ....came to my place and pluged in my diag kit.....his faults were all MAP sensor related...turned out to be elbows degraded... and vacumm pipe problems where they conect to the manifold and trap...... this is so common its untrue...remember these rubber elbows are 20 plus years old and in the most harsh environment possible.......
