3DS Max is probably now the most popular modeling and animation programme. Maya used to be right up there too, but since 3DS Max got bought by Adobe they've taken the edge. Having said that, them releasing a new version with just some added frilly bits every year is getting a touch boring now!
Crafted by my own hand in 3DS Max 4 (think this was my third ever model):
And a Clubby I haven't yet finished:

As others have said, ProD is good for learning, but after a while modeling in it you'll quick find its limitations. Solidworks and Inventor, and ProE are the next step up, with Solidworks being the most popular. Then you get very very expensive/specialist CAD programmes like Catia, master that programme and you'll never be short of money!

FormZ is a pretty good program
If you are wanting animations, then Lightwave, Maya or 3D StudioMax will get you there!

I've used Inventor for the past couple of years, can't compare it to SW or Pro/E, haven't used either much, but compared to Pro/D it's lurvely

The rendering engine's pretty good too.
