Morning Ladies of TMF!

Just a quick question to those of you who exercise (if any!!).

I went to the gym last night and did the cross trainer & some weights for my arms, but what is the thing to do when you need to flatten your tummy?!

I can't find the right machine / exercise!

Any ideas?!!

Cheeers!

A "feeling fatty" Sheree!

I go swimming regularly, which I find helps as its quite low-impact (for my knee) but gives you a good workout

If its your stomach you want to flatten, sit ups are meant to be good too :dontgetit:

I used to use a carpet roller (it really is called that) everyday but now I fast walk 3 miles most days up and down a hill it's flat anyway, I even have a bit of ab definition but a chinese take away will soon sort that out :dontgetit:

Against popular believe, situps, and any machine that involves that sort of movement will not flatten your tummy, it just tones your stomach muscles. Any flab or fat you have around the midriff will still be there. To get rid of that fat you need to do all over exercise like swimming, running, rowing or cycling.

Also, according to my cousin (personal fitness trainer), you need to be doing short bursts of exercise, like full pelt for one minute, with a rest for 30 seconds, repeatly for up to 20-25 minutes. If you just sit at the same pace for any length of time, after a couple of weeks your body gets used to it and you don't get as much benefit.

I do the "fat burn / weight los" programmes on the cross trainer, that changes the level & speed throughtout the 20 mins :dontgetit:

So we'll see.

I train at the gym but am more into bodybuilding than fitness but i do know enough about it. If you really want to get into shape and loose the stomach you will also have to ammend your diet. You cannot expect results from just excercise, one does not work without the other.

For toning stomach muscles you will be best off with sit ups or crunches also when doinf these dont just sit up direct turn to the side as you raise and return as you come down, you will nedd to do theis from side to side. I would reccomend 3 days a week with a days rest in between each to let your muscles relax and repair. For each set do 20-30 then rest for around 1 min to let your muscles return. Then do the same again and untill you have done three sets of 20-30.

Another good one for toning is with use of a bar. Yopu can do this with a good length of broom handle. Rest it on your shoulders and stand in a star position. Make sure your arms are extended the length of the bar. Turn from side to side as far as you can keeping your stomach tense all the time. This can also be done in the same way if you bend over to face the floor and turn in the same way as you would standing straight. Repeat this as you would the above sets as well.

Make sure you dont over do it as less is more when it comes to toning. You must let your muscles relax and repair or you will not see any gain just aches.

Always remember that befor you dramatically change your diet consult a dietisciene to make sure what your doing is correct.

Hope it all goes well but also remember just because you dont see dramatic changes it does not mean that its not working. It will take time and if you dont stick to it you wont see and difference.

I do (well havent in a while) sit ups but crunches (they are harder) and I do several sets of these. As Jammy said it wont get rid of flab, it just tones the muscles!!

Swimming and Cyling work most of you muscles and they are really fun :dontgetit:

You could get one of the gym staff to draw you up an exercise routing as they will ask you what you are trying to achieve and show you what is best to achieve that!
