Mine used to do it when I had a bad earth on the rear light clusters, it also did it when the front indicator connections lost their insulation and shorted on the bodywork.

I had exactly the same prob with my mini.

Turned out to be a bad earth on front indicator.

Remove the lens and prod/firk the bulb, chances are it will work!!

Clean up the contacts on the bulb as well as the earth and that should sort it

I cleaned up the mounts on the rear cluster because thats how it earthed, I have the plastic type front indicators so I have no idea how that is earthed.

Have a look at the socket where you put the bulb into, chances are its got a covering of green power on it, give the contacts a clean with some fine sandpaper and try again!!

I mean the entire rear light unit then where the bolts go through the mounts of the body, i just scraped it with a flat screwdriver to remove anything that stops the electrical flow, e.g paint, rust, oxidisation.

Sorry - only just saw this.

If your hazards work and flash fine, but your indicator stays on and doesn't flash, then the problem is almost certainly your indicator flasher unit. There are separate flasher units for hazards and indicators, one from a permanent live for the hazards, the other from a switched live (usually) for the indicators. Find and swap the flasher units over to test, but if that works get a new one for the indicators circuit.

The indicator flasher unit will be tucked up behind your dash clocks. You can reach it by putting your hand up and under the parcel shelf and feeling for it.

Have you tried your indicators when your engine has been running too? Sometimes a poor connection can cause them to run slowly or not at all when the engine is off.

I recently replaced the fuse box on my Mini and that made a hell of a difference as my old one was rusty as hell on the back. Now my indicators work perfectly again.
