I havent fitted one yet though cant see it being too hard. My qusetion is is there any advantage of fitting one in a carbed mini because it would be able to pull the chock on a cold start.

Ive always wondered with remote starts, just how long would it take for you to leave it parked up in gear, and then go "ey up, check this out"..... CLUNK! "ooo err, thats not gone well!"

Unless there is some magical trickery that stops all that embarrasment??

There is in an auto!

Otherwise just get into the habit of not leaving it in gear? I only leave it in gear when the handbrake won't hold...

my mate had a remote start on his civic, that ended up into the front of his neighbours transit

With a carb car, you could always pull the choke out a smidge so that it's enough to start from cold, but not too much that the engine would run high on tickover once warmed up?

My Mini has a mul-t-lock on the gearstick so the car is locked in neutral, might be worth getting something like that so it doesn't start in gear

Bwahahah that made me chuckle

I think remote starts are a bit silly really (just saying i wouldnt bother having one fitted, the principle, on the right vehicle, in the right situ is ace) but imagine if you started and unlocked your car remotely in the middle of a busy city, thats just got to be theives paradise if they can get to it and lock you out before you get there. Also what if it goes off in your pocket as you're walking away and you dont notice it? Although I think some of them have a combination system am I right?

read about a guy with a car-pc and wifi that started up his car while uploading music and movies to the car-pc so that the battery wouldnt flat out.
also when its cold its nice to warm up the car.
there's situations, but not many :)

And yes, I think that the alarm is still on even if you start the car, so the thiefs would still have to deal with that.

Well my dad fitted one to his golf gti and that was fairly simple
as was wired to ecu and imobiliser and then a seperate box which was wired to the ignition

BUT onnnnnn the mini its diff, so getting stressed at it nowww

and yes, thers a sensor you can fit on ecu and etc that wont allow for starting if its in gear :w00t:

Still have no idea how to wire it to this thing tho :/

You'd never get around the MPi/SPi immobiliser thought would you... that'd still be turned on...

I've always liked the idea... but there's too much potential for it to go horribly wrong... I'll stick with the keys :w00t:

So is this Golf injected. As said previously in cold conditions you are going to have problems starting the car in cold weather unless you have managed to create an automatic choke? Im presuming that there are no instructions with the remote start? If so just leave it to the experts.

As has been said, you've got the problem of there been no automatic way to not only increase richness of the fuel mixture, but also the idle speed on cold mornings. Unless you pull the choke out before you leave the car.

Plus, I wondering how long the remote unit tries to start the car before it gives up, if it gives up at all!? I can see it causing flat batteries or dead starter motors personally.

Plus, I've been told its illegal to remote start your car, but I question the reliability of this source of information.

If you were that bothered about having one then it would be easy to pull the choke out when you got out of the car.

Maplins sell remote push to make switches and remote on/off switches. So you could wire ignition to a on/off switch and start to a push to make switch. That way push one button for ignition then hold the other down until it starts.

DONE.

I'm not sure on the law, but yes they will sell it for show cars...

Just like those stupidly bright HID kits, the non legal, shops still sell them for people who want to use them in rally cars and the such..

If i had remote start, i wouldn't give a toss about the law, cause i'd have it for my benefit. Only reason i'd have one though would be on a turbo car, so i can use that clifford system with the turbo timer, so i am able to lock my car up and go, and the engine can tick over properly untill the turbo has cooled down.

EDIT:
Choke situation...

If you wanted to 'hi-tech' it, get yourself a solenoid or something simular, that will activate when you hit the remote start...

When you get to the car to drive off, just push it back in, sorted.
