I am new to the world of Mini's and have a 1988 Designer Mary Quant. The problem is a rotational noise from my off side front wheel it sounds a mixture of a rubber squel and a metal grind (hard to place) i have changed my wheel bearings, have put on a new rubber CV gaitor and have changed both discs and brake pads. I have taken out the pads a number of times to grease them up as well as replacing anti squeal shimms.

The noise comes when i brake and turn left more and usualy only starts a few hundred feet after begining my journey can some one please advise me what it is, cause its driving me round the bend

I have got 12 inch revolutions on i have checked for fouling on the arch and cant see anything catching i have been told this may be a outer CV joint problem but not sure because its not knocking any thoughts?????

I've been getting a really horrible grinding noise coming from my front drivers side wheel, Im pretty sure that it is the brake pad grinding on the disc, I have no idea how to stop it!!

Again thats something i have tried i replaced both pads and discs. If yours is happening just when its braking then i would say its either the pads are running low or if its happening all the time then it could be your calipers sticking. The way to do that is to take out the pads and check the caliper and the piston. This pushes the pads on to the disc. Check for wear or pitted marks around the cylender shaped piston to see if its catchin, if it is worn then get a replacement. If its the pads that are worn theses are easy to change just remeber the brake grease.

I would love to know whats causing my noise its driving me made

I replaced mine too, but they are still doing it! Mine happens when I am just driving, but stops when I brake. Both by stepdad and boyfriend have had a look and checked over all my brakes, but cannot find anything wrong. It is driving me up the wall too!! They took the pads out 2 days again and copper greased them, but haven't stopped it!

Its a nightmare i know, I am running out of things to do to mine , youd think that a small part of the car it would be easy to find.

Iwould suggest to give your cylinders a dismantle and a good clean to see if they are catching otherwise we both have noisy mini's. I have been told that wheel bearing sometimes play a part in noises from them breaking down inside the hub. you can check this by jacking it up and seeing if there is any play in the wheel.

Whats the cylinder? :) Shes had new bearings, a new hub and new ball joints about 2 months ago, I changed all these before I did the brakes because I thought that was where the noise was coming from! :xxx: The cv joint was ok and the track rod ends are pretty new too and are fine! Also the dampers were replaced not that long ago! I shall have to get the cylinder checked then! Mine does it the warmer the car gets, its odd, because if the weathers hot, then it does it more! When I set off it doesnt do it, but once the brakes have warmed up a bit, it starts!

Ok, we have two threads going on here!

Samuel:

What was the condition of the bearing like when you changed it. How easy did the outer race of the new bearing go into the hub? Was there any evidence of the outer race spinning in the hub? I say this because a bad bearing that is left can force the outer race to spin inside the hub, wearing it larger, so you will never get the same fit, even when fitting a new bearing - and the same will happen.

Same to Sazal, did you personally fit the bearings?

i've got exactly the same problem!!,squeaking/grinding sound drives you mad.i know my wheel bearings need doing, plus i suspect the engine mounts and subframe mounts need doing too,all these contribute towards the sound.
i have recently had the following changed on frank the mini

-wheels (4.5x12)
-front rubber cones(added hi-los)
-front dampers
-tie bars
-front subby mounts
-top engine steady bushes
-alternator/fan belt (what a job :P )
-plugs leads and airfilter

the sound is still there and driving me mad as i have no radio to drown out the noise,i will be doing the following the giving up :)

-new disc's/pads
-wheel bearings
-subframe top mounts
-engine mounts
-lower steady bushes

and when all that fails i'll just fit a loud radio :shy:
