i've got exactly the same problem!!,squeaking/grinding sound drives you mad.i know my wheel bearings need doing, plus i suspect the engine mounts and subframe mounts need doing too,all these contribute towards the sound.
i have recently had the following changed on frank the mini

-wheels (4.5x12)
-front rubber cones(added hi-los)
-front dampers
-tie bars
-front subby mounts
-top engine steady bushes
-alternator/fan belt (what a job :P )
-plugs leads and airfilter

the sound is still there and driving me mad as i have no radio to drown out the noise,i will be doing the following the giving up :)

-new disc's/pads
-wheel bearings
-subframe top mounts
-engine mounts
-lower steady bushes

and when all that fails i'll just fit a loud radio :shy:

I must admit that the loud sterio does dround the sound out, what do you think about the fact it could be a CV joint i'm not sure whether to try or not

Is it possible its coming from the driveshaft rather than the wheel. I'm thinking maybe the rubber crosses or whatever replaced them in later cars. When my crosses first went the sound was a thud thud thud thud with a metal grinding which came from one of the D bolts hitting the engine (or firewall cant remember).

Hi,
I am no expert but given all the things you have changed it sounds like something is misaligned somewhere.
making the disc and the pad skew onto the unpolished part of the disc.
have you checked the pads for even wear. ie are thet wearing the same all over the pad.
has it always been this way since you got the car.
If not when did it start.
Have you been in a front end accident
banged a kerb a bit hard.

I have had the car since Jan this year and drove it down to the midlands from cheshire with out a worry. after a few days i noticed the noise. it has got prgressivly worse. it had a MOT and passed days before i got it. so i cant say if it has never had a front ender. the pads are wearing evenly bu i have noticed when i ws checking this that the front panel has become ever so slightly unwelded from the drivers wing i have looked for wheel fouling but can not see anything. One mechanic said maybe a CV but the other dissmissed it as they thought not. I am at my wits end and am constantly taking it to a garage or jacking it up myself.

get 4/5 of your friends to sit in it while you take a look at just how low the front end is when under load. and remember when turning corners the car will also lean in and increase the lowering effect.

The bearings realy wernt that badley worn they were probably not the main cause everything was in place and looked ok the new berings went in like a dream

back to my point, you had to drive the outer race into the hub right? They shouldn't just slot in, that would indicate a worn hub.

there was nothing to suggest a worn hub, at the time they were put back in it was all checked i only helped in the process but my dad who is as stumped as me said it was ok, he had mini's all through his young days and didn't come accross this problem

just thought you'd all like to know i've found the cause of my squeak/grinding noise!!!!and it's not very good

after taking passenger side wheel off i noticed that my inner cv joint(to gearbox)looks fubar'd and the driveshaft has been gradually eating it's way at the subframe!!,i dont think it's a good idea to drive frank at the mo and he'll have to get some attention asap.
all i can say is check yours
