Just as an update, I've stripped the engine bay prepping to lift the engine out. Taken the cylinderhead off, headgasket is fine. Lots of black build up on ALL OF the pistons, this could be due to not actually running the engine properly for a while, and just starting it up and letting it idle upto normal temperature I guess.

Only thing I've really noticed is there's quite a bit of 'play' in the pistons, can rock them back and forth. The bores or smooth, though you can feel a lip at the upper part of the cylinder.

I've managed to get the engine out of the car and strip it.

All of the piston rings are intact, so doesn't seem its as simple as that. The thing I can see is the black carbon marks do stretch past all three piston rings, and this is especially bad on #4. When I was taking the engine apart, there seemed to be quite a lot of play in the pistons (i.e. I could rock them backwards and forwards by maybe more than 1mm!).

I'm on a budget because I wanted to get the car resprayed and new front end.

So, what are my options? And how much is it going to cost me?

If I rebuild this engine I'm going to have to get it rebored, resurfaced, crank reground, new bearings, new pistons, rings etc. Then I'm not too sure about the state of the cylinderhead, as it could have been skimmed before. Then I've had it skimmed since. The last thing I want to do is chuck money at rebuilding this engine then having problems with it.

On the otherhand, I've been looking at engine kits from morspeed/MED. Morspeed seem to do quite competitive prices, their 'sports' 998 kit seems to boast 70+ bhp, but then I'd probably be looking at getting a 1275 head aswell!

I'm looking for a good, reliable performance boost, without paying the earth.

Hello fellow Stokie!

I've just thrown away a perfectly good 998 - d'oh.

I'd throw in a cooking Metro 1275 - good power boost and reliability (I know where there is a decent one in a scrap yard in Stoke - pm me)
