White Roof.

It's flaking around the edges and I'd much prefer a white roof anyway, and figured it'd be an easy thing to respray as it's one block colour.
How do I go about it, and what do I need?
I don't have access or the money to buy a spray gun, so would rattle cans suit? would I need to sand it down to the bare metal, primer it and then spray? I'm really clueless.
Any help will be much appreciated, cheers.

Its these flakey edges that can cause problems and reactions quite often.
I personally would 320 the whole roof and rub the flakey bits back as far as they need till theyre smooth and dont keep peeling off.
Use red scotchbrite for in the gutters and really make sure you get in all the corners well.
Then prime to roof.
Flat the primer with 320-500 and paint white.

Rub the whole roof back > scotchbrite the gutters > 320 the whole roof > primer > paint white.
Done?
& can all of the above been obtainable in rattle cans, any recommendations?

Cheers, much appreciated.
Last question - How many cans should get the roof covered? & would I need more than one coat of white?

I'll pop down to a local bodyshop soon then, and also get some spray cans so I can colour code my arches, cheers.

My 1990 Racing Green came originally with a white roof, but someone along the line decided to have it sprayed silver.
Yer I've seen it in tesco car park and I don't think the silver roof suits it. I agree, I think it would look better white.
Cheers

I'm going to get around to getting this done either next week, or the week after next.
Couple more questions..
After I 320 the roof and Scotchbrite the gutters,
+ can I primer straight away?
+ how many layers of primer do I need?
+ how long should I leave the primer before painting white?
+ I'm doing 3-4 coats of white, so how long should I wait in-between coats?

Yes, as long as your all masked up and the roof is clean from dust, dirt oil etc. Panel wipe from a automotive paint supplier is best for wiping the remains of anything off the roof.
Depends what primer your using really. Aerosol primer tends to bit abit thinner. Id say you want 3 good coats across the roof to give you enough to flat back to a nice face to paint on. Id start by getting some coverage just on the areas that had paint flaking off. Then get some nice even coats across the whole roof.
In decent conditions, you can flat primer the next day. If you leave it a few days you get less sinkage of any edges after painting it. Once its flatted its ready to paint straight away.
As for painting the white, you want to wait till the paint has gone tacky. Check this by sticking your finger in the paint on the masking. Once tacky you can apply another coat, but try not to put it on while its still too wet or gone too dry..... Im sure you will get the feel of it!
Good luck.
