hi all,

i havent searched as im in a hurry to get my car finished before it gets dark.

i am changing my ball joints, so need the wheel hub off the car.

i have managed to do one side, but the other, i cant get the c.v joint bit of driveshaft out the hub.

one of the two bearings seem to be stuck to the shaft and im not sure how to get it out.

if anyone has any suggestions id be extreamly greatful. what shall i do to get my hub off?

cheers in advance

cut the cable-tie around boot on the pot joint and take the whole lot out - easier to sort it out on the bench - once the driveshaft is out whack it back into the pot, re-fit the cv boot and put a new cable tie on.

its still got the metal tabs ones, not cables ties. would it be alright to get this off and replace it with a cable tie?

i guess so.

do you know why the bearing is holding on for dear life?

I had this problem when rebuilding my hub the other day. I beat hell out of the cv trying to get it out of the hub and it wouldnt budge. I ended up using a big press to push it out. When it did manage to get it out though it took the inner bearing out with it, as it was welded to the cv.

As above sort it on the bench a lot easier

I had one do this a few years back the inner race of the bearing was welded to the cv joint as something was spinning, had to grind the old bearing off and skim the cv joint shaft.

i to had this problem, you could use as i did a bearing puller to remove the stuck bearing,my weather seal was leaking which caused the bearing to slightly corode on the shaft, the bearing shattered when i tried pulling it iff, removed all components, micromeshed the shaft and fitted fresh bearing.

dam. sounds like mines knackered too.

i think i have a spare bearing from another car that i never used. guess itll be easier to get it on a bench and change the ball joings and the bearings.

this simple jobs turning into a nightmare.

spent all day trying to get the top ball joint off!!

First breath deeply and have a beer..... Minis draw blood...its a well known fact...ask anyone else on here.

I had exactly the same problem..... as you have given up for the evening and you have stripped that hub and cv I suggest chill for the evening and tommorrow come back with a bearing puller from halfords..... hook the legs as best you can round the cast hub and put the jack part on the driveshaft.... wind it in and it will go....

Thats what I did..... it works a breeze........ by the way slightly tongue in cheek post mate but Minis wind us all up....when they work its brilliant tho

cheers for the help. im unsure of what you mean about the puller. is this to get the hub off the driveshaft, or the bearings out the hub?

i have a hub puller (well, borrowed) but the legs dont fit on the hub anywhere.

any ideas?

The large bearing puller from halfords has 3 legs.... and a center screw ... if you wnagle the legs around the cast hub and put the screw in the center of the drive shaft you can pust the shaft off the hub and bearings..... then you have a hub with bearings in in your hand.... to get the bearings out their is a kind of slot in the hub so you can drift the bearing cages out... i didnt take ipcs.... but its only a little fiddle to get the legs round the hub as they dont quite line up with anythin flat
