but the point i want to get to is what do people have ?... T2 or t25?... i know the diffrance .. and i know the power ranges between a t2 t25 and a t3 .. i don't want a t3 because i can't use the mirage manifold .. but what can people tell be about there turbos.. and what they found was best and reliable?

Have a look on the Garret site. You'll see there's a bit more to it than the basic model of turbo. You can get adapter plates to swap T2 & T3's. A 1380 won't be far off a Renault 5 so maybe see what's popular on them?

Im building a turbo lump at the moment and i am going down the same line as you.

I dont want to cut the bulkhead either so i will also be going with the mirage kit.

I currently have a T3 but im going to sell that and get myself a T2 for two reasons. Firstly i want to get the boost as low down the rev range as possible so im not thrashing the engine all the time to get it on boost and also i want as little lag as possible.

Ill be getting the T2 also from mirage motorsport

MAT2S1 hybrid T2 Turbo

Obviously i will be sacrificing some of the top end power but as it will be mainly used on the roads i feel this should make it a very driveable car while still being nippy when it needs to be.

All depends on what you want to do with the engine and what the car is going to be used for. A T25 may be a good middle ground for you?

A GT17 from a saab 93 or 95 is a very good turbo.

I'm still not 100% sure what that turbo actually is in the pic at the top, had a few chaps on TM look at it and the general concensus was that its a T25 in a later GT style housing, it has the same AR's as the R5 GT T2 though. It makes for a lovely daily drive/weekend blaster, making 160 horse @ 15psi on mine and boosts almost as soon as you put your foot down, lag is non existant pretty much.

I might sell it though if the price is right as mines not a daily drive anymore so i'm going to sacrifice some bottom end for a lot more boost. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

as said, check the garrett site, and get some flow charts. Figure out what power you want and pick a turbo to suit going on its characteristics

yes i compleatly agree.. i think a t25 would suit what i want.. i did not want a T3 becuase of the lag.. and i had herd alot about that .. the gear box is built for acceleration.. so boost from the word go would be nice.. but i would also like to save just a small a mount of petrol.. so yes a t25 would be cool...

i had a good long look on garretts site.. found the turbo i am after.. all the sizes for the manifolds.. as i am planing to have a mate of mine build me one.. i know how it's got to go.. just was unsure on the sizes.. so thats for that!..

all this has been mega helpful! my mind is mad up .. it with either be a t25 or a R5 turbo if i can find one!

and i will be PM'in you bud!

thanks!

:D

May I ask what sort of MPG you lads running t25's are getting? Considering your on preety much instant boost, surely thats going to put a big dent on fuel costs? I should imagine its blooming well fun thou :D

If I stook with my T3 then Will I be better off for long journeys etc? With it not being on boost, it won't be thrapsing petrol in? I'm hoping my logics right....

I'm afraid your logic of flawed Tom.

Because you run a relitevely low CR the engine is not efficient below the boost threshold. If you are knocking around below 3000rpm all day you'll nned big throttle openings to make any progress. In reality, for what you want, something smaller than a T2 might be even better.

Remember, when cruising at speed the turbo will not be making any boost, so fuel efficiency is great. My 998 running a T2 does over 40mpg, and I know others running GT17s that do similar mpg on 1275s.

T34 all the way.. lol.. i ran a T34 on mine, it was a bit laggy but it kicked in real hard and didn't take long to hit 22psi once boosted...
