Bobby, your 6x9s reflect sound off the rear window at you as the glass is hard. The soft carpet and your legs dont do so much reflecting, and more absorbing.
Any speaker on axis (ie pointing directly at you) will produce a better sound whilst be driven with less power. Speakers in the dash board are good, speakers that are properly baffled or padded in the dash and amplified are astounding. 6x9s are a crude way of producing some lower end bass with losses in the midrange sound spectrum (except the dedicated sub/mid-bass 6x9s).
Can some one do me a favour please. Go sit in your car and choose a track you like, listen to it, set your system up to play it as best it can.
Now find some one who has some components up front (on axis, doesnt matter if they are 4, 5 or 6") and a sub somewhere.................I would lay money on it having a much better sound than any amount of 6x9s or speakers shouting at your feet.
Im almost tempted to chuck my stuff back in my car and find some of you at a show to prove the point!!!

Yes its true components give a better sound. And mounting them to play into your ears will make them better. But 6x9s offer easy speaker set ups quickly and relatively cheaply. Good high end 6x9s can offer good sound quality and volume but it comes at a premium. They are also easier to mount only needing to cut one hole. And let's face not everyone who wants a radio wants a competition sound setup.
Oh and my 6x9s were given to me, and my second pair i got cheap so took the opportunity to get a little more volume. I will remove the cheaper set of 6x9s and add a set of quality components up front but its not what is vital to my system at the moment.
