Well, that was a fair slog to read through all that.

To the original poster, I think you are being a little foolish to consider bodging this repair up with a quick fix in order to have a nice paintjob done. Cancelling the job, even if it is short notice is much better than having to fork out much more money in the future to have the patch repaired properly and the paint done again. IMO, do the job properly, so it only has to be done once. I assume you are doing all prep for the painter t keep costs down, well if you cant repair it yourself, I would consider spending a lttle extra cash to get the painter to do it (if no him, someone he knows, Im sure he will be able to do it or know someone who will)

As for the other 3 pages....if I was pottering away in the garden doing something and a stranger leaned over the fence and said "thats carp, Id be ashamed to put my name to work like that"
at best he would be told to foxtrot oscar, at worst he might earn himself a slap. The distance and anonymity of the internet often lends people a certain courage they would not have in real life, meaning hey often blurt out things without thinking to hard.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated, but groundless "slagging" for want of a better word from a stranger is unwarranted.
to be honest, this wasnt the first shirty reply from midridge I have read, and the old "40 years man and boy, been doing this since I was a nipper, I KNOW BETTER THAN YOU" attitude is no excuse for a lack of common courtesy. Im not sying we should all hug and say please and thankyou and have flowers in our haiur, but a little thought before criticising someone so strongly is needed.
If he chooses to take the huff and not come back, then fair enough, that sums up a rather arrogant attitude to me.
"they wont listen so im going away, and im taking my ball with me"
I would expect that in a playground, not from an adult.

Use the respray money to get the metal work repaired, then save for a respray in the future.

Having something thats rot free is far more important than shiny paint that will last 5 minutes before it needs doing again.

Yeah but if i did that, i'd end up with a mini full of patches, primered areas and with very bad condition paint overall. Then i'd start uni where i'll probably skint for the next couple of years and the little time i do get to spend at home during holidays i won't even feel like driving my mini around because it will just look a mess.

The way i see it at the moment. My mini has had a decent bodge done that should (fingers crossed) hold up for a while until i can afford to have these areas properly rewelded or i shall weld them if i'm happy with my welding by then. My mini will look great once its done and i'll be dying to drive it all the time when i'm at home, even if a couple of small rust bubbles appear along the bumper lip through the new paint.

To me that sounds like a much better option as opposed to me just getting depressed over the state of the car and wishing i had something decent i could drive.

The bodge i've done looks pretty decent anyway if you have a look: Link

;)
