Well, at last the Teapots have gained their 1-star kayaking certificates. This qualifies us to go out in a canoe and fall in the water unaided. Tonight we spent an hour drifting up the estuary with the tide in the pouring rain learning to paddle backwards and sideways, and then we spent an hour and a half paddling back against the current and wind and playing tag with a tennis ball. This is called FUN. Then we had to do "monkey arms up" and "monkey arms down" (anti-capsize drill) until we fell in, which was easy. You have to hang in the boat upside down in the water and flip off the spray deck (skirt) and roll out in a somersault. Fun, not.

Seriously, when we get the hang of it it will be fantastic and we can learn surfing and we can also take trips to other beaches and go fishing in Canadian open canoes.

Join a canoe club! :shifty:

Kayaking is too much hard work, get an over zealous mate to tow you out into the sea, then use minimal effort to surf back in (thats where the real fun is, like surfing only you get to have a sit down as well).

Well done the Teapots!

Me and Sy have just bought Kayaks!

It's great exercise.. and a fantastic, peaceful way to see places from a different perspective... I love it!

Sy has welded up a special roof rack for Toad and we're taking them up to Scotland for our honeymoon next month (OOH-next month, that's really soon!!!!!) :techsupport: Toad looks hilarious with both Kayaks up there, but I'm sure she'll cope! :shifty:

Well done Teapots. Thought Bungle had taken you sailing, but no, the Teapots are safe.

Just a note to people, as i get really annoyed with people who think a kayak is a canoe! so here is pies lesson;

Haha, general approval then! Yes pie, we have been lectured on the difference between canoes and kayaks. A one-star pass in "mere" canoeing means you can't go out in a kayak. Bit like learning to drive in an auto.

I like being among people of all ages who take responsibility for themselves on the water but still like mucking about and having fun and are always helpful. Makes a nice refuge from an everyday world of selfishness, greed etc rambles on for many pages zzzzzzzzzz

PS Sorry if I've said this before but if you go to this website you can track ships all over the world, and some of the tall ships have amazing blogs from the crews as they go around the world calling in at exotic places. Costs a bit to go on a training ship, mind.

No its not!!!! lol

A Canoe is an open top, 2 man boat, usually made of wood.
A kayak is for one man and is made out of fibreglass 9 times out of 10, and has an open top.

That looks and sounds like great fun, Mr T, but I wish you'd make your mind up - one day you're making me feel young, the next day you make me feel positively geriatric!

Or...

A Canoe is either one or two man, can be made from fibreglass, wood or plastic, but has a different shaped hull (flat bottom) to a Kayak. Usually people use oars to row or single paddles with a canoe.

A Kayak can be either one, two or three man, can be made from fibreglass, or wood, but modern ones are nearly all moulded plastic or kevlar and come in LOTS of different shapes and sizes depending on what type of kayaking you're using it for, usually used with a single 'double ended' paddle.......

And to be fair... people all over the world call ther Kayaks Canoes and vice versa... it's mainly the UK that have 'chosen' a word for each type of boat.

I used to do kayaking and attended a few races until they were stolen. It's pretty good fun and excersize.

So a canoe is a surf board with a seat and sides, and a kayak is a surf board with sides and a top...

Sounds like your living the life down there Teapot! Just a little bit jealous! I've been kayaking once or twice, and been out in a canoe, much preffered kayaking and really wouldn't mind taking it up as a hobby!
