ok guys i have a 1275 carb engine, was looking at doing a rebuild on it, i want as much power as possible. was looking at morspeed for some ideas and came across there 1293 turbo challange engine wich push's out around the 210 hp mark. i have e-mailed morspeed to see if they can help me with the information on making one but no one as got back to me so i'm thinking there not willing to give out there build information for proberly expected reasons i.e dont want anyone to make and sell one cheaper. so my question is does anyone know the specs or what to go for when building the engine. Now i can't afford to buy there engine as 5k is alot of money in one hit but i can afford to use premium parts over a few months so any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers matt

top of the engine down.

head: big vales flowed and ported but not too severly. need to keep the port size down but still flow well. drilled for 11 studs.

Block: 20 thou over bore, honed, 4 bolt centre strap. grind off around the water pump on the block, get drilled for 11 studs.

Pistons: Accralite forged pistons are the ones to go for in my opinion the 18cc ones. although omega forged work well too.

Rods: id go for Carrillo forged rods however you might be okay with lightened, stress relived, shotpeend rods, and then balanced end over end.

cam shaft: id go for something around 260-265 duration.

Crank: wedged, bladed, cross drilled and balanced, or a forged item.

Gearbox: stright cut gears, stright cut drop gears, centre oil pickup pipe and a decent cross pin diff

flywheel: steel flywheel lightened, steel back plate, double grey diaphram.

other: brise alternator and starter motor (both not essential), electric water pump, turbo oil pump.

and your turbo gubbins, if i missed anything out sorry my mistake.

wow brilliant just what i needed, now morspeed claim this engine will do 210hp what do we think would be realistic. as this 210hp must be a bit overstated.

With the right mods etc this is going to be acheivable but at a cost etc.. you probably better off aiming for 150bhp or so and then slowly progress upwards if your not happy with it. just remember the more power you run the more bits break, and to be running that kind of power you need to make sure you spend a lot of money on a decent gearbox etc... i was running 139bhp in mine at 11psi then lowered the compression and wound the boost up to 22psi, it went extremely well untill i stripped my straightcut box.

scarey.

im building a 120bhp n/a engine before i build a turbo engine so i can build up abit of experience.

you will most certainly need abit of practise otherwise you will end up in a hedge.

turbo minis are sketchey without an lsd. think steering towards cars as you over take them.

youve got it in one,
build up to it

i have nearly wiped out a whole row of cars as my mini wanted to 'do its own thing'
can be very scary

but i dont drive fast any more

I'm in agreeance with the above, start with running 100-125 flywheel power which is very achaivable on a pretty much standard engine with about 7-10psi boost. once you have got used to driving it then start playing

Combination of this and a yorkshire moors road, ended up with my car been airbourne on the moorlands. resulting in a smashed oil cooler. Could have been alot worse, we were lucky.

200 horse is easily acheivable, but its all down to choosing the right turbo.

I've had a mate very kindly do the sums for me and we've got a turbo sorted that should make just over 200 nana's at 20psi as a conservsative estimate, all based on my current engine specs which are:

1293 bottom end
cast AE pistons
phase 2 cam
morspeed booster head spec head
8.7:1cr

should find out for definate over the next few months as i'm just about to start building the new gearbox for it first.

There's no real need to go wild on the crank and rods as you don't need to rev the engine, mine are totally bog standard and the engine was making 163 nana's @ 15psi.
