Thanks dan :genius:

Thats such a good link from guessworks with all the production dates.

Those two you linked to on autotrader are cooper sports. You can tell by the year and the spec they have. They are both nice!! think I prefer the first one even though the seconds got fsh lower miles etc.

Sorry, in my first post I kept talking about "cooper sportspack" this is what I call mini cooper sports in my head. :)

Hope i'm right....

Cooper sports are a particular special model of the cooper that were factory produced with all of the sporty spec as previously mentioned.

A "cooper sportspack" (what i kept saying instead of cooper sports because i am thick) would be a cooper fitted with a few sporty touches the buyer has selected such as the arches etc. I have a sales brochure for the cooper from 1999 and in it says...

If you want to underline your Mini's prowess and sporting history, the Sports pack option does the job. We'll fit extremely large, dramatic looking and extra grippy 13" x 6" alloy wheels with low profile tyres and body colour wheelarch spats. You'll also get two auxillary driving lamps and two front fog lamps for total brilliance on drak bends. And a big bore chrome exhaust pipe finisher. Inside, you can give extra emphasis to your Mini's sporting personality by adding oil temperature and battery condition guages. Plus a polished alloy gearknob; complemented by drilled alloy door releases, door pulls and window winders.

And a cooper 's', as dan said, can be any cooper which has had the magic tuning touch at the John Cooper garage.

and there were also coopers without the sportspack option that were built between 1996 to 2000ve narro arches and 12 inch wheels. which is what ive got. bog standard and its quicker than a lot of cooper sportspacks.

i was keeping out of this one because to be honest, i just couldent be bothered, but i have to say a few things...

cooper sports 500s are NOT limited editions >:(

think about it, what does the 500 mark..... the last 500 production minis.

if they classed them as limited or special editions this would completely cancel out the "last 500 production cars" status.

they were not and never have been classed as limited or special editions.

think about it :xxx:

as for the whole sports pack issue, i really couldn't care less, all you need to know is that they look out of proportion, slow the car down and ruin the handling, and all MPi minis have exactly the same technical spec so your mini "cooper" is little more than a set of stickers >_< :P

and the S in cooper S really does stand for nothing. BMC suggested calling it a cooper special but john cooper said "no way. we'll call it an S".

it doesnt stand for special (or sport) and its not an alternative to special, its just an "S"

Me too redhotmini! I think thats why in my head I keep calling the cooper sports a "cooper sportspack" because apart from the pretty looks they aren't actually any sportier in performance, in fact they are worse aren't they anorak!

The cooper sports 500 aren't a limited edition or a special edition, but come on, they were the last 500 minis off the line and they come with a plaque and a certificate so they are pretty special! Everybody loves a certificate! >_<

yes they are very special, they are the last 500 production minis, but they are not classed as limited editions, even though they were made in limited numbers :dontgetit:

and one more thing... all mini production ended in October 2000. there is no such thing as a 2001 mini, its just a 2000 mini that was registered later >_<

I appreciate that this is a bit of a thread revival, but on the Limited Editions Facebook Group, for most of yesterday we were having a debate about whether or not 500 Cooper Sports are a limited edition.

THE ANORAK (one of the old TMFers that I really miss), puts the case against in this thread, but others feel that as a limited run of 500, by default they must be a limited edition. Also, there was an option for dealers to register them with DVLA as Rover Mini Classic Cooper S500, denoting them as different to the Cooper Sports built immediately before them. Not all dealers registered them as Rover Mini Classic Cooper S500, but that's what they should have been registered as.

So, in your opinion, are the last 500 Minis built limited editions or not?

I can see the argument for both sides on this. Personally, I think the Cooper 500 S Works, of which there were just 25 made, were the real collectors items of the last few. Values over the next 10 years will give us the real answer.

Since we were talking about this in person in Brighton yesterday I thought I would add the list of Cooper variants I drew up recently.

Cooper 997 Mk 1

Cooper 998 Mk 1

Cooper S 1071 Mk 1

Cooper S 970  Mk 1

Cooper S 1275 Mk 1

Cooper 998 Mk 2

Cooper S 1275 Mk 2

Cooper S 1275 Mk 3

Then there is the more complex issue of the Rover Coopers including MPis with Cooper specs but not badged as Coopers. I also include the LEs produced by John Cooper Garages.

1990     LE                        RSP                                 1050 plus 600 export

             Standard             Mainstream                      19899

1991     Standard              SPi                                   42880

1994     LE                        Monte Carlo                     200 (150 flame red, 50 black)

            JCG                      Grand Prix                        35

1995    JCG                      Cooper S

1996    LE                         Cooper 35                         200 plus 1500 Japan

Standard               MPi                                   65695 (all models including non Coopers))

            JCG                      Cooper S Touring

            JCG                      Cooper S Sport 5

1998    LE                         Cooper Sports LE             100

non Cooper LE     Paul Smith                         300 plus 1500 Japan

1999    LE                         John Cooper LE                300 UK (Brooklands Green, OEW)

JCG                      John Cooper LE S Works  25 from the above (JCG)

JCG                      Cooper S Works                250 max

2000    Standard              Cooper Sport

            Standard              Cooper Classic

            Non Cooper         Se7en

            JCG non Cooper  Se7en SE

            JCG                      Cooper Sport S

            JCG                      Cooper SE

            LE                         Cooper Sport 500              500

It seems unwittingly I classed the 500 as an LE.
