Hi there. Just picked up a nice little Mini at the weekend. 1990 998 Mayfair, white, 4 spots, chrome kit, union jack on roof and rebadges as a Cooper. It's actually for my lad but I am going to be driving it for a while as he is not 17 til Jan but he has wanted one for ages (so have I for that matter) and the prices seem to have gone up rather over the last few months so I thought we had better get one before they get into the silly money.
Have a few questions about it which I will ask here if no one minds and then if I don't get too much of a response will repeat in technical section.
1. How to cure a squeeking alternator. Only at tick over but quite loud. Is spraying it inside and out with WD40 OK.
2. The tops of the doors seem to have bent out slightly causeing them not to seal prperly and there is a small crack where the window frame joins the door panel at the rear of the passenger door and the fron of the drivers door, both on the inside. How easy is it to realign and weld these.
3. Squeeking gear lever linkage housing. Assume one of the mounts are loose or need relacing. How easy to do.
I used to do a lot of my own car maintenance but have not done a lot recently due to modern cars being so damn complicated. Can't wait to get stuck back into something which is a bit more basic.
Cheers in advance and there will probably be more questions later.
PS forums are great places for info

Hey, glad to hear you've gone and bought a real car after years of driving those plastic things!! I've heard about these fathers that buy minis and then get their son something else too drive because they can't give the mini up!!
With the alternator, it sounds a bit like it maybe the fan belt. Check that the fan belt isn't worn, if it is, replace it. If it isn't, its simple just to slacken the bolt that fixes the alternator to the bracket, pull the alternator out a bit and then tighten the bolt back up.
With the gear linkage housing, sounds like it maybe the mounts.
I'll let someone with more knowledge handle the doors question.

Cheers for the reply
The squeeking definiatley sounds like metal on metal rather than rubber squeeling but will have another look when I get home.

Hiya, welcome.
Yea it sounds like mounts on the gear remote not difficult at all, just a couple of bolts, they may be a bit dirty though!
I'll leave the doors as well even though i have the same problem so I'll be looking out for an answer! When i first got mine i was a bit lazy and decided to go through the dreaded car wash, i got a wash at the same time ahhhhhhhh!!!!
And the alternator doesn't mind WD40 however as jammy said could be fan belt...or it could be the alternator bearings, lots of alternators sat around in scrapyards. But then if its otherwise in good condition i'm sure it won't cost much to get new bearings put in.
