ok
fixed battery cable as advised, all running fine except battery is now making a high pitched whining noise!
anyone know what the problem may be and if ill need to replace battery, any idea of costs for basic battery also appreciated.
hope to get it sorted asap because supposedly going to geordie job on sun.

thanks

The BATTERY is making noise? You put your head in the boot and you heard a whining noise? If you had said the alternator under the bonnet was making noise this would make more sense.

If the battery does have problems, have the alternator and charging system checked before you invest in a new battery.

I'm not an expert, only thing I can think of is if you've got buckled plates, if it's a light coloured battery you should be able to stand it on a bench and see the plates in the light through the battery? This won't work if it's black, obviously. I haven't had time to think how that'd cause a whining noise, but would definately say it's not a good thing!

Per the last sentence of my last post... "have the alternator and charging system checked before you invest in a new battery"

Parts suppliers in the U.S. will bench test an alternator for you for free to determine if it's good or bad. If it's bad they can't tell you what's wrong... only that it doesn't work right. They do this test for free as their incentive is to sell you a new alternator.

If your alternator is bad, perhaps it's letting unfiltered AC back to the battery which may or may not be audible. Regardless, have the alternator tested.

errrrrrrrrrrrr
ive no chance of getting alternator checked tommorow because im at work (and its a saturday)
definately not got time to go to U.S. to get it checked out (!)

all i want to know is if anyone has experienced this before and if its a bad idea to try to drive

I've experienced the whole battery smoking thing, TWICE in fact.

It was my +ve cable shorting on the exhaust pipe, killed the earth lead on the battery, and obv i replaced the positive lead and the battery too!

Costly but its much better at starting now :P

I have never heard of a noisy battery though!

Back to the top for another round of posts.

I posted the question about a "whining battery" on another message board I frequent. Only one veteran responded. His comment was that a direct short of the positive battery lead could cause a diode in the alternator to blow. Hew went on to say that the failed diode can cause the sound you're hearing. His advice was to have the alternator tested.

As a footnote to this, you may need to take the alternator to a real auto-electric shop, not just a parts store. On the simple bench test performed at the parts store... I don't know if they'd detect a failed diode since your alternator appears to still be making electricity. A more complete and careful test is probably in order and you should tell the shop what happened so they know what to look for.

Be sure and post back with your findings.
