Have finished putting my engine in today and gave it the grand firing up.

It turns over well to my relief, but isnt getting any fuel. Realised it didnt have any fuel in the tank so put 5 litres in and tried again, not starting, took the fuel in pipe off the carb and tried no fuel coming through. Took the fuel pipe off the filter and tried, still nothing!!

The fuel pump hasnt been touched so I wouldn't have thought (hope it isnt) that....

Any other idea's?

blockage maybe? have you tried cranking it over with the pipe off the pump? only do this if it is all cold to avoid fire!

pump shd be at rear of engine, normally.

Also, if the fuel lines empty it's hard to get fuel through, I suggest trying to bleed it through, or 'prime' the fuel line.

I had this issue with my new engine, got a fuel can and hose, fitted hose to pump in, and a small funnel to other end, poured fuel in and turned over to prime the system, then removed funnel, and put hose into can to run the engine up.

You could try something similar to the tank?

I'm happy to give that a try if you could draw a diagram or perhaps put it in even more dum dum terms  (sorry!)

I took the tank out of its bracket so that it was sitting in the middle of the spare wheel well. Fuel is now pumping all the way through to the carb fuel in pipe.

Connected the pipe back on and tried to fire it up again and theres a pop which sounds like a "PFFFFFFFPH" and then smoke comes from the air filter side of the carb!!!

Now thats the problem?

I haven't time to draw a diagram today.

Get a length of fuel hose.
Remove hose from fuel pump inlet, block with M6 bolt, else fuel will go everywhere.
Fit one end to fuel pump inlet, (behind the engine, assuming you've got standard pump)

Funnel or syringe fuel into fuel line, until it's in the pump.

Put fuel line in fuel can, have fuel can above level of pump, (i.e. not on the floor).

Disconnect fuel line from carb, place into a clear catch bottle.

Disconnect coil negative, (so car won't start).

Turn over engine until fuel goes into catch bottle.

Connect fuel line back to carb, reconnect coil neg lead, turn engine til it starts.

Remember, if it's new the mixture and timing may be out too.

I've taken the filter off and pulled the damper out, using it to lift the piston up and loads more smoke came out!!

Ill take a picture now.

Can anyone at all shed some light on the problem?

The latest : I put it back on its wheel with the tank loose in the boot. When I opened the boot to bolt the tank back onto the side I noticed there was petrol trickling out from behind the tank. Moved it slightly to get a better look and it started to gush out!!!!!! :D :o :o

When I eventually managed to get the tank out of the boot and get a piece of pipe with a bolt in the end of it over the tank outlet, the battery box was totally submerged. over a gallon or petrol was swimming about in my boot!

Turns out the pipe had split pretty badly so will be putting a whole new and slightly longer piece in (from tank outlet to where it joins onto the metal pipe behind rear subframe) to avoid any further catastophes.... £5+ down the drain :dozing:

And that would make the bang sound inside the carb and cause it to smoke?

I haven't touched this engine in anyway. Will someone be able to time it without it running?
