Cam Install Without Engine Removal

i've read on here before (can't find the post now) that you could fit a new camshaft without removing the engine by cutting a hole in the inner wing?
Is this actually possible?
I would prefer to do this when i get my own pride and joy because it will be my daily driver and i don't think i'll be able to take the engine out.
Thanks,
Andrew

EDIT
AH! You have a 998. Just open the tappet chest and take the follower out. Simple.

Radiator out, timing cover and gear off, then you have access to the end plate and can remove the old cam...carefully! To get clearance I cut through one of the radiator grill bars and bent them away, then the cam comes out via the n/s wing.
It is fiddly, but eminently doable if you are careful.

Do you really need to disturb the head?
I can't see a way not to... you must remove the cam followers, and to remove them the pushrods need to come out.... hmmm.... I guess you could just lift the rocker assembly off... hmm..... *ponders*

Can i stress that you cannot just take the rocker assembly off as 4 out of the 9 head bolts on a 998cc hold the assembly down and you must always remove and replace in order and tighten ot the specificed torque!!!
Simple to remove the head, but you'll need a new gasket set for about £20. (NEVER reuse a gasket, especially a HG!).
Thanks for asking this Q tho, i was wondering the same thing and now i know!!!
On a similar topic of working without taking the engine out (without hijacking the tread!) according to Haynes you can change the clutch without taking the engine out... true?
Matt.

True, but tricky, you have to undo the engine mounts, jack that end of the engine up a bit, (with everything else out of the way, and then you can get bell housing off, and clutch out, but it's quite a pain, and tight from what I hear.
Would be easy with a removable flip front though!
