Right, ive fitted a stage 1 kit to my 1987 998, does anyone know how much it increases the bhp by? I have to tell my insurance!!

The kits advertised as a 20% power increase...which would work out at about 8bhp more going by the factory spec. But roughly how much bhp will my mini have lost over the years?!!

Thank yooo!

I'd say you'd be lucky to see an extra 6HP.

Well for the insurance side tell them your car has lost around 8hp over the years and with this kit it had added around 8hp but with better fuel economy :yinyang:

Have you ever had a rolling road done with this car before?

I got an extra 7 bhp from mine with a stage 1 but my engine was stripped and rebuilt with gearbox last year.

If you phone your insurance company and call it a stage one kit it won't matter about BHP - for them it's just a trigger to charge you more.
If, on the other hand, you call them and say you have had the engine carefully re-engineered by an expert Classic car Garage to improve fuel economy
and efficiency you have every chance of asking for a discount.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet...

I didn't know you could do that and it isn't classed as deception?

And, have you actually tried making a claim on your own insurance by saying such a thing and got away with it?

But as the exhaust, air filter and carb needles are all modifications, dont you need to tell your insurance?...

And Kam, Ive never RRed it before, was always running really nice and had never had anything done to it, so didnt really need to!

I wouldnt tell your insurance sazal, they will onlt charge you more, as they are like that. its not that big of a modification tell, just keep you standard air box just incase.

I don't see the point declaring a Stage 1 kit to be honest (Q abuse!) i mean if its like the minispares kit then the K&N is only a panel filter which you don't have to declare as it is a replacement element made by a different company, plus it sits inside the standard airbox. The exhaust and inlet manifolds are only mild steel (or is the inlet alloy?) and doesn't look any different at the end of the day except for the fact that they are no longer one single cast piece. And as for the carb needle, who the hell knows its in there anyway!?!?!?

Don't get me wrong here I always insure my modifications on my car (especially since i'm getting my Golf GTi re-mapped in the near future) and it is silly not to, but i seem to struggle with minis as although these bits add more power etc etc they are in effect just "better standard replacement parts" that are made with more modern technology. (...waits for someone to say that that is the definition of a modified/performance upgrade...)

Fair play when your getting into the realms of new alloys wheels for your mini or serious performance gains like a turbo/SC or a Stage 3 head, and obvious interior changes like bucket seats and ICE as these will make the car "more theivable" i mean you wouldn't bother telling the insurance if you put chrome wing mirrors on...would you?

Not being an idiot here but insurance related stuff always kicks up a fuss and at the end of the day we all know they are robbing bar stewards, but everything should be done legally so if a Stage 1 kit needs declaring then so be it but can somebody explain to me exactly why we should bother?

Now that's advice to be ignored if ever I saw it!

You're talking someone into doing something illegal. It is a legal requirement that you tell your insurance company about ANY modification from standard, no matter how small you believe it to be.
