1994 1275cc sprite.

hey all.

i have a strange knocking noise coming from the driverside footwell. it feels as though its right behind the accellerater pedal. at first i thoughtt was either my ball joints or wheel bearing as i was planning to change them this weekend. i packed the ball joints full of grease on tuesday so theyd be ok until tomorrow but ive just had it on stands and theres still a lot of grease in the ball joints and not much movement when i rock the wheel.

could it be coming from somwere else? its a really loud nocking and does it constantly whilst driving.

cheers, phil

check sub frame mounts and the floor plan is not cracked around them

if you lift the carpet you should find them

You may have to poke with a screwdriver, rust sometimes gets hidden by paint.

I had a knocking noise and found a great big hole in one of the arches after a bit of poking, felt a bit gutted for finding it nobody likes a mini sieve but now I know the problem.

make sure your looking at the subframe mounts and not the steering rack mounts

Thanks

ok so ive checked around all the arch and floor plan cant see any signs of bad rust or any cracks. i took the top mount off when i change the head the other week scrubbed it clean and painted it n put new bushes in it there was no signs of cracks around that either.

how can you tell if the subframe mounts are worn or cant you untill you.ve taken them off?

cheers, phil

i had the same problem a little while back and got my mate to check it out, turned out to be the cv joints were on they're way out, front right was completely wrecked, hence reason the knocking was coming from that side, ended up replacing them and my wheel bearings at the same time, and now no more knocking

hey again.

erm ive just pulled out the carpets in my car because they stunk and uncovered an unpritty sight lol. how i didnt see this from under the car i have no idea but basically theres a huge whole with a crack coming off it in my floor a bit below the steering colunm towards the gear stick. is this going to be the likely culprite for the knocking noise? ill try and get a pic but ive broken the screen on my fone so it cou;d be a bit hard.

cheers, phil

I'd think that hole/split isn't good, probably best get it repaired.

However footwell knock could be top engine steady, these 'go' more often then subframe mounts so check it first.
Any knocking will transfer down the bulkhead and you'll feel it at your foot.

Hi Guys,

I have the same sort of problem with my rover mini italian job 1275cc, Its a knocking noise coming from the drivers side footwell, it only seems to knock when Im accelerating from being stationary, so when i push down on the accelerator and lift up on the clutch, i get the nocking noise mainly in 1st and 2nd gear? when driving there's no noise at all.

I cant seem to work it out, but its defiantly an external knocking noise rather then internal.

Any help would be great as Im stumped!!!

Regards

Martin

As above, check engine steady, probably the bushes need replacing.
