Is it illegal to have small numbers on the doors, say 3cm high?
Is it illegal to have these numbers on the front or rear of the car?
Is it illegal to have the numbers not on a white background?
Etc, etc, etc, seems a very ambiguous law as presented here, so I'd expect it to be at least written down somewhere?

me neither, but apparently it is law. I could ring the traffic police and ask?
It is illegal - but not too strictly enforced. It's hardly worth the paperwork and a lot of police are actually unaware of it! (as they seem to be with most crimes!

That said, I did get stopped once by one of Gloucestershire's "finest" and was warned that having a number was illegal - unless a single diagonal tape line was put through the numbers. The reason being is that it denotes to the police that you are not taking part in a motorsport event (not necessarily a race) on a public road. The maximum fine (if enforced) is £500
Or at least that's what the plod told me!

Well how on earth do rally cars 'legally' drive to the next rally stage? I've never seen a WRC stage on TV where they finish the course, take their numbers off then stick them on when they get to the next stage.
They don't stick a cross thorugh them either (I dont think, hmmmm...)

because there competing on a stage rally covered by many ruels governing everything they do, there given road books with direct routes to next stage...when they retire from the stage they HAVE to remove all traces they have been competing, i HAD to when i retired otherwise i could have got a black mark put against my licence effecting who accepts me to rally in what ever event i go for next
ever noticed what numbers WRC cars have too? id like to see you find a moder WRC car that uses door numbers, look on the rear passenger window at the bring iluminious numbers
