Hi Mini people. Just a mad idea, has anyone put a 4 cylinder 2.0 16V Red top Cosworth Turbo in a Min`. I just happen to have one (engine/ box) and wondering what to do with it. I`m sure that many years ago I read in a Min mag that there was a chassis/frame you could buy to do this conversion. Any info or points in the right direction would be very helpfull, Ta.

Theres a conversion for a vauxhall 2.0l 16v redtop... if thats what you mean. I'm pretty sure theirs no such thing as a 'red top' cosworth engine... if you mean the YB turbo then no, their is no off the shelf conversion. I think you'd have a real hard time squeezing one in too, once you've got type 9 gearbox on aswell, they are big engines!

yes there is, kind of. Some of the earlier red top has cosworth heads on them. But they wernt LET's as standard, they were early XE's, so it would be an after market turbo.

So yes... there is such a thing as a red top cossy in a way.

Its rumoured that Cosworth developed and made the Coscast 16V head that went on the first XEs, maybe this is what the OP is referring to.

EDIT: Too late.

well, there is no rumour really, they did design the head on the early XE's full stop.

As for 3mm wall thickness ally casting. That was developed mainly for the K series engine. Cosworth used the technology with a different method, using a transformer device as a pump to pull the ally through a tube rather than 2 rails of electro magnets. Then rover realised the transformer like pump was muchhh better!

"red top" when talking about cosworths refers to the colour of the cam cover. Some cars had red, some had blue and I believe green also. There is a difference in engine specs between these units, although I have no idea what the differences actually are.
Its a popular term on the Ford scene as a way to identify the engines, and has nothing to do with the Vauxhall r"edtop" C20XE engine.

Just for reference

Cosworth ybs came with RED , blue or green rocker covers, hence why he explains it as a "red top"

this is what he is refering to i'm sure.

Although it is the first time ive heard of one descibred in that way!!!

The different rocker covers didn't conform to any different states of tune, just different colours found in different cars. i.e 2wd sierra, 2wd saff, 4wd saff etc,

Oh?, I always thought that there was a difference, as the redtop units seem to be more in demand?

Dunno to be honest, Im not that well versed in the Ford stuff.
