Hello all.

i've been offered some black carbon impregnated exhaust heat wrap and i really have no idea if its any good at all.
Its to go on a 1310 a+ engine running a weber 40 and a fast road cam.
As i already have the engine and manifold out of the car fitting it shouldn't be 2much bother.
I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with it and also how to fit and fix it?

Tim

Not sure about Weber's but worth it on an SU carb, as the manifold is so close t the float bowl sometimes boiling of the fuel can occur! ^_^

Yep, I had this problem with mine, its brill stuff, you can now touch the float chamber after the cars been running!

You just wrap it round, its a bit fiddly and use some wire to hold it on >_< We used stainless steel wire on mine, so it wont rust :mrcool:

I have Heat exchange wrap on my manifold and it works a treat, perfect for 5 port setup as the inlet and exhaust are close together. It keeps the heat in the exhaust heat and prevents making the inlet manifold get hot- therfore causing cooler air entering the engine ^_^ happy days

I always use stainless steel cable ties to attach the heat wrap ^_^

thanks for the advice guys. looks like i'll be taking up the offer. Just gunna have to have a rummage around in the garage tomorrow for some stainless ties or clips. On another note how much of the stuff would i need in terms of length to cover all 3 down pipes and a friend of mine says you need to soak it in water first although he's using the white fabric stuff?
sorry for the questions, tim

Most of the usual suspects sell it i believe such as demon tweeks and any good motorsport company should stock some. The easiest place to buy it is probably the web but be careful as quite a lot of it is too cheap to be of a decent quality i believe.

If you can afford/find it, buy Thermo-Tec or even DEI products, I have tested both and they have proven to work. The cheap stuff is, well cheap.

I used the Termo-Tec stuff and bought the 25mm x 15m roll and it was plenty. Yeah, you have to wet it first before putting it on and id advise you wear gloves when you do it as it irritates your skin >_< I bought mine from Europa, but its very pricey!

This is just what i have been told...

"Exhaust heat wrap stuff can have adverse effects, such as causing the exhaust to overheat and warp"

Anyone care to elaborate?

Guess it could be true. I've never really looked at a header as a heat exhanger, more as a directional gas flow device.
Although most elements in an internal combustion engine are heat exchangers in a way.

I have seen turbos glow red hot and never seen a header or downpipe warp. These get hot plus still support the weight and vibration of the turbo.
Only mentioned it as a more extreme condition than a N/A (engine) header will normally see.
But then I'm not considering thermal shock, i.e driving through water, that could certainly cause warpage.

All of it kind of makes sense in my head. Which now hurts. Too many variables.

Perhaps the experts will give us a more educated opinion :-

wrap has been know to crack stainless steel manifolds, but mild steel is fine. always pros and cons with any "mod" but in this case its useful. i have it on my redtop engine and helps keep alternator and rad fan from cooking

Have seen it damage mild steel too, maniflow won't warranty ANY manifold's wrapped in heat wrap.

Yep my friend had his maniflow wrapped in it and it distorted and cracked! Unlucky for him a fuel pipe split and set light to his engine bay as a flame escaped from the crack in the exhaust!!!!!!! lucky he was a petrol garage with fire exstingishers!
