I have a Element Replacement on one car, and a Cone on the other!
i do like the cone, the exhast tone is brilliant, sounds really NICE! and does look cool

i'm starting to sway to a cone now.

Quick question - will I need to adjust the mix if I put a K&N filter on? I have a standard at the mo and recent dilemmas with my car not working, I don't want to mess around with it again at the moment in time.

If not, then I'm putting it on later.

Yes you will need to adjust the fueling to match the increase in charge that the cone filter produces, whether a different needle or just adjustment in the richness. The stoichiometric ratio will be all over the place with no adjustment, like mine was a few years back.


I would have the car on a dyno as soon as the air-filter is on, if not, like you say just leave it for a while.

We just fitted a slightly richer needle and then got it crypton tuned some time later.

I've still got to get it on the rollers to get the benefits of that K&N and stage one kit.

It's been recorded that you'll lose up to 6HP with a cone filter on a small bore.
I find everything in my car is a compromise between looks an performance so fitted a K&N stubstack to maybe regain those 6HP.
If you decided to keep the standard airbox with a K&N + a few holes drilled, this will be noisy as well, maybe not like a cone, but close I'd say.
Since I like the carb noise but not the cone filter look, I stuck one of this on. Sorry no pics of the install yet, but they look the part ;D

Did you find you gained the lost 6HP with the stub stack?
How does a K&N cone filter actually lose you 6bHP?

Read around, Keith Calver did a write up with different setups and back to back rolling road power tests. The best by far it´s the replacement K&N with a few holes on the casing.
It´s something to do with the turbulence caused by the cone setup. But as I mentioned, for me was a compromise between looks and performance.
I am not able to confirm if I gained or not on horse power as there is not rolling roads in Venezuela. It´s tuned at best with colortune and a wideband A/F for neddle profile.

Quick question - will I need to adjust the mix if I put a K&N filter on?

The standard needle will be very inefficient when you upgrade your filter.

the ITG filters on Calvers website, or from ITG direct are great filters, certainly look the part and do perfomrm very well on many applications.

Not the cheapest though, but now-aday's you do pay for what you get.


Sorry to dig up an old topic, didn't want to make a new one unnecessarily!

Just wondered if anyone is currently using the ITG filter with the stub stack from Calver's ST shop:

I would assume that it's performance is above that of the standard casing with holes and a K&N replacement filter, but has anyone got any facts about these filters?!

The stub stack looks well designed so I suspect that might edge it out over the standard casing? Any new thoughts on this?
