The bad news is, if the thread on the backplate is stripped, then new they are about £33 :(

If its the adjuster "bolt" then shouldn't think they are much.

But it does sound like a stripped thread somewhere, the 5mm movement is the corners of the adjuster peg pushing the shoes out.

Not sure what 2nd availabilty is like..They have a nasty habit of seizing solid those adjusters.

A new back plate isn't so bad. Apparently Metro ones fit, they have a separate, bolt on, adjuster - but that costs as much as a Mini backplate.

The adjuster unscrews, if you took the backplate off you could arrange it to push as well as turn it, which may help. That means disconnecting the wheel cylinder of course.

Metro ones do fit, not sure what years though ??

We fitted Metro backplates to my sisters, got whole backplate assembly, shoes, handbrake spreader, cylinder .£10 for a pair local scrapyard.

Looks like they used the same shoes and cylinders up to the very end (Rover 100) so could be an option. The rear cylinders are a different bore though.

You wouldn't need anything, save any bits that aren't reusable of course.

Nope, I got that the right way round ( :errr: I think)

Yeah it'll be in your haynes - just 3 nuts 'n bolts once the hub is off. The only bit likely to cause any grief is removing the wheel cylinder - sometimes the pipe doesn't like it if it's corroded.

Aaaah, by save I mean "apart from" not "keep" :(

Well the clip can be a pig too, but if the brake pipe is rusted in to the pipe union if tends to twist when you undo it. Best to replace the pipe, but holding the union still and unscrewing the cylinder (once the clip is off) may do the job.

The hub is the spinny bit with the wheel studs in - again it'll be in your Haynes :dontgetit:

None of this is any harder than fitting brake shoes.

Dont think it has been mentioned but mkae sure the joint in item 7 in the diagram above is very free and greased and moves easily.
