Has anybody had first hand experience with these M Machine panels?

12.12.00.47 Adaptor to Mk1 Lamp Mounting, Mk2-5, LH
12.12.00.48 Adaptor to Mk1 Lamp Mounting, Mk2-5, RH

Earlier in its life a previous owner of the car decided they wanted a newer MK2 and cut big square holes in the rear panels for the newer tail lights. I sourced some panels from a local distributor and they were rubbish. They are going back. They weren't quiet big enough to cover the cut holes and the stamping was poor quality. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hmmm. I have used minispares versions of these plates, which were ok... but not 100%, and my shell was genuine factory mk2/3 rear lights. Because your shell has had the holes cut 'afterwards' then they may be even further from a good fit for the adapter plates. Best bet would be to buy a new heritage mk1 rear panel and cut the peices you need from it

I used them on my mini, they were a prety good fit to be honest didnt need hardly any messing about to get them to fit right...

But as yours is a MK1 shell that has been cut this might cause you some priblems getting a good panel as the hole might not have been cut exactly the same size as the later holes, so that might be why the panels was to small for the hole...

It's a lot of money, but judging by the fact you have cut the whole boot floor out for replacement, I'd guess that half-measures aren't your thing! British Motor Heritage have recently started to produce a 'hybrid' rear panel which has the window aperture of the later cars and the lower half of the Mk1 with the correct holes for the Mk1 lights. You could use the lower half of one of these panels and have the shape for the lamps exactly correct. Most of the weld-in conversion plates seem to be a bit 'flat' without the definition round where the lamp mounts. You can find the panel here.

That was exactly the problem. I could live with the plate not being exactly the correct size. I could fix that if the panel had the correct contours. That rear panel is $595.00 here in the states

If somebody has a rotten MK 1 shell they aren't planning to restore I could sure use these sections.
