From the alternator bracket I'd say that's an A+ engine, so definitely not a 1300GT! It's not uncommon for the block and head to be drilled for 11-stud when a modded head is fitted, especially when the whole engine is being rebuilt. Have you tried the engine number doo-dah on Guessworks website?

What? No, that's no A+ - not completely :ermm: :D

It's a A-, mixed with some A+ parts :P
Timing chain cover breather, starter and clutch are A+, head and block are A-. Breather is indeed a injection-engine late one.
The little bracket on the gearbox (below starter) is A+, introduced with the big splashcover (early 90`s, thought),
gearbox could be A+ too (cast number would then be DAM2886 or DAM5626, on front of the box).

So well, it's 1275 to 1380cc engine :D
I would'nt worry. Give it a rebuild in in with it!

Cheers,
Jan

Yes it is a mix & match but the block is 100% A+. The alternator bracket is A+ and they don't fit on the A engine. The dizzy is a Metro 65D4 which don't fit A blocks.

I'm refering to this picture:

And this is a picture of an A+ block:

An A+ dizzy can be modded to fit (in fact I don't see ANY clamp type here) and I'm guessing the A+ alternator bracket's stud-pattern is the same as with the A- (or is modified here).
But the A+ one is shorter and thats why there's a long threaded rod, thought (the A+ bracket is closer to the engine number tag, another indication for A-!).

Regards,
Jan :D

PS: F*** me sideways if there's a A+ variant without any ribs... I don't think so!

The main thing is i have the engine number.... its...12h/496f/12908

Probably a daft question, but is it definitely 496 as opposed to E96?

The block is 100% not A+ Asphalt is correct.
I have a list and the engine number is also not in it!
there is a 12H 996 that is MG metro, not this engine.
The 12H 398 which is 11 stud A block and looks the same as the one in the photo that would be a MK3 S late
is the engine number reverse stamp?
