I'm guessing you're saying irreversible without shaving?
It gets that ingrained I guess??

Never been tempted myself, and I've had some weird haircuts...
But good luck with it!

It is possible to remove dreads without shaving, but it is very difficult and time consuming  And thanks for the good luck wishes!

NO NO NO NO NO !!!!

No "dread shop" necessary. Just use natural products, not some overpriced poo the "experts" such as knottyboy and dreadheadhq try to palm off on you. And NO WAX!!! There is only one decent resource on the internet for dreadlock information and support, the clue is in the thread title! And they aren't out to sell you anything so it is completely unbiased. You can find all the products you need without those cash leeching sites ^_^
[/rant]

Sorry I just don't want to see people with silly fake-looking waxed up rubber-banded dreads and £££ missing out of their wallets :P

Lol no worries I just had to make that clear  ... to be honest if I didn't have someone who knew what they were talking about link me to the proper place and give me the facts I would have gone to one of those other sites, so I'm glad I have the knowledge to shout at people! ^_^

Ha ha, I think you would look good whatever you did to your hair!

I've never had dreads but I did have my hair in loads of little plaits and beads for ages. Even had some in my beard, Lol! The ones in my hair used to fall out sometimes and beads would cascade everywhere. I don't have enough hair for that sort of thing anymore though

Cheers Juj, do you have any pics of when you had dreads? :w00t:

There are a couple of pics here.

I'm afraid I have to disagree on the not washing bit - that just smells :P Dry, clean hair knots up alot quicker than greasy hair as the oil makes it slippery. Wax is near impossible to remove properly and can end up rotting inside the dreads :shifty:

I am washing less often because I'm not playing with my hair so it's not getting oily so quickly, however I used to wash every day so my scalp needs to get used to the change  I can only leave it 2 or 3 days so far but this will get longer over time :)

I used beeswax, Lise, not the "product" type. Is quite good really.

If you're keeping it clean, don't go near kids! Nits will love ya and you'll never get them out.

(Actually, keeping away from children is generally good advice :genius: )

Aaaaaaaaaaand, it's not smelly, it's pheromones isn't it? :teehee:

My hair is naturally quite wavy (as you can see in the last pic) so I'm seeing alot of it twisting and knotting of it's own accord already, I may try and take some pics of actual dreads forming at some point, though I'm only 6 weeks in so the change is minimal.

If you're into that kind of thing, threading beads around the "knotlets" will help 'em stay together.

I'm getting jealous actually. Long black dreads would be ace, but I'm not sure Mr Juju would agree. :w00t:

And I always keep well away from kids when possible :w00t:

Dreads are awesome, do it! Dooooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiit :shifty:

6 weeks, actual knottage :w00t:

Mostly underneath atm, I have layers in my hair so the top where it is shorter is less knotty, it's all underneath :shifty:

Haha thanks Chris I love it, it's exciting watching them change, I'm getting some loops now which is good because it means the hair is knotting tighter

I also had dreads!! it was good at the time when i was 18 but they just got a bit too impractical for me and i fancied a change. The first set I had was when my hair was still quite short and I made the mistake of using bands and wax...and they went mouldy! so i combed them out after a few months and re-did them a bit thinner and without wax! They looked pritty good, as my hair is gingery they got all naturally bleached at the ends.

the best thing you can buy for dreads is a tiny crochet needle (i had a 1mm but apparently my mate had a 0.5 which was amazing)! just poke it in and out of the dread and it pulls the knots really tight and you can get the tips really nice and blunt in minutes!! I never really did enough rolling and they went all wiggly and more natural looking.

Also, I used to get asked for drugs a lot and expect a few stares. I have now re-grown my fuzzy curly hair!

Dan
