I try to grease my nipples, but the grease just seems to come out of the gun where it attaches to the nipple,
I'm guessing that the nipple is blocked!! can anyone confirm this. By the way this a serious question!!

Thanks in advance

are you sure your doing it right? youve got to get the gun to pretty much click on the nipple (thats what it feels like) and then get it at the right angle to pump grease into the joint. otherwise itll just come out as you described. thats what happens with mine anyway. if noone had told me i wouldnt have known to be honest and i dont know how much you know lol so worth a post.

The gun connection should click onto the nipple securely. You then need to make sure its at the right angle or pushed on harder else the grease will slip out the side.

The nipples dont need loosened to do this, but if you thik they may be blocked, unscrew them and poke a bit of thin wire through them to clear out the blockage.

As above, you don't need to loosen the nipples to grease them.

It is important the end of the grease gun is straight to the nipple and sometimes holding it on with a little pressure can help.

Otherwise remove them to check they are not blocked or seized - you shouldn't be able to point wire through as there should be a spiring loaded ball at their outer end. Check this ball is free to move (should push into thenipple and spring back) chances are it is seized up. If so replace then replace the nipple - they're not expensive and not worth trying to fix.

I tend to wipe my nipples with a clean rag that's got a bit of WD40 on it.

Then I poke the ball-bearing in the centre with a small screwdriver, just so it moves in and out.

Then I have no problems greasing my nipples.

:D

You need to grease them at least every 3,000 miles (original BMC Recommendation).

I got my grease gun from Halfords about a decade ago and it cost around 20 quid. It's the type that takes the grease tubes, so it's easy to load and works straight off with little messing about.

The grease tubes cost a few quid each and just keep on greasing until the stuff starts oozing out the other side (for the rear radius arms and front top suspension arms etc).

So you'll probably need to buy a few tubes of grease for the first time you carry out the task.

moving parts need grease. suspension joints front and rear to keep them moving smoothly and freely without causing damage and also helps keep grit out a bit. there are several nipples on and around the front hubs and some more around the rears too. guns and grease are widly available from any motorfactors and halfrauds. i did it every time i service it. just pump the grease in until you see it coming out of the joint.
