I've stripped the spare bootlid except for the lock which I'm leaving in place.

Whats the steps to take from here? Welding is out of the question as I dont have a welder or know someone with one so its gonna have to be fiberglass and filler.

cause the minis are such a hard ride the filler and fibreglass will just crack with stress i know this cause we had the same thing happen in college when a kid skipped the welding on a saxo

Make up a card template of the number plate recess then transfer that to some steel and weld in place bit by bit allowing it to cool between weld s as not to warp it so the new panel is flush/just sitting slightly lower. Then once it’s fully welded and the welds have been ground back, lot’s of fibreglass to get the basic shape/cures of the boot lid and then filler to smooth it all off.

The numberplate resess is barely the depth of a piece of cardboard, and if your going to put fiber and filler on at the end then why not just do it from the start and save the bother of welding?

cause from expericance it will last a few months max
people weld a plate in so they aint got to rip all the fibreglass and filler out in a few months to do it again

IMO its going to crack after time whatever you do (unless welded in very well so no or very little filler is needed), its just how long it takes before it cracks lol. But welding is defonately the way to go.

to be honest i havent really looked at the standard boot in to much, but if you are filling it, i would have a look at possible beating the original pannel into the basic shape first and then fitting that, althoug there would be alot of filler needed it would be better that a huge slab of fiberglass and filler...

you could do what i did for my mate the other day at work he got a 1275 mini and bought a single shell flushed boot and couldnt work out how he was going to get it to fit haha

i said leave it with me i cut the original skin off so was left with the back and bonded the single shell one to the original steel back of the boot worked a treat!
