Please Help.

I have a 1999 rover mibni sportspack with 13 inch wheels, but i have ongoing problems with the wheel bearings going! I have replaced the drivers side ones three times now and one/twice on the passenger side. I have only had the car a year and we r fed up of spending out on wheel bearings every few months.

I know the 13 inch wheels have more problems than say the 10's the weight etc and the low profile won't help either.
But it does seem odd that they r going this regularily. As my other half has an 1983 austin mini and his wheel bearings last forever and yes his are on 10 inch wheels.

But What could be wrong, can anyone help. Has this happened to anyone with a sportspack??

Thanks

Sounds to me like something else isnt right, i would start looking at all the suspension components and also look to see if the hub is distorted in some way?

I use timkins..... and their is NO grease supllied, its a bearing and normally bearing suppliers supply bearings not kits...... if i was you Id order bearings from M Machine or Minispares......... they wont come with grease...... get some Castrol LM and pack the bearing correctl..... what torque ar you doing the castle nut up to?

oh sorry my mistake the grease was supplied with the drivers side bearings which was non genuine! we did use castorol grease for this bearing which is in question. And torqued upto the haynes manual guide.
What do u mean by packing, is there a particular way of application ?

This is probably a case of not tightening them up with a flat washer first....

I use Timken bearings the secret is to NOT fit the coned washer but to tighten using a flat washer go for a cup of tea...... then gently remove flat washer and lightly grease cone washer and nut and torque up.....

However I would now suggest that before you do any of this you need to check your CV joints, as I am sure they will have been damaged by the bearings running on them

also take a look at CV fitting in this forum

I have laid out exactly what needs to be done a few times now in quite some depth

Fitting roller bearings in a sports pack will simply wear out quicker.

Is the torque setting gonna be completely different for the castle nut in 13inch wheels as compared with 10 or 12 inch wheels?
We followed what the haynes manual said.

The guidelines for mpi wheel nut tightening always makes me laugh, first you tighten it up to the recomended torque then to the next available slot in the castle nut - or two grunts I believe is the technical term. Seriously only use Timken bearing kits, fit and tighten up to torque then drive around for five minutes and then do a final torque and tighten.
