Hi guys
just pulled away from the garage and got an awful knocking noise.
It only happens when I am accelerating or increasing the revs of the engine
It is very loud and I am out of ideas as to where to look first.

I checked under the rocker cover and all seems fine

There is slight play on the pulley of the water pump (is this normal)
how can I check it is the water pump. Can I disconect the pully on it some how to check?

Any ideas please

Possibly engine steady bushes are shot or the engine mountings are gone or not tight, those can be the caus of the knocking.
The pulley should be tight, but exactly where do you feel the play?

i just held the pulley and gave it a wobble and could feel movement, but am not sure if it is just normal tolerance

the knocking is in time with the revs so i am doubting engine steadies or mounts

Does this happen while you are in gear and traveling or while you are stationary?

Check oil level first

does it go away when clutch pressed ?

is it a low hollow knock , a rumble , or a tap ??

any recent oil light when driving , or if you have a gauge what is the oil pressure - warm at tick over ??

oil level is good
its a quick knock in time with the revs getting faster and then stopping when you stop increasing revs or stop accelerating
what ever it is it is when the engine is under load i think
It is quite loud and distint. Also you can hear it inside and outside that car. I got a few odd looks as I drove the mile home with it.

I really hope I am wrong - but it sounds like a big end going / gone / spun

but without being next to the car , I can't say for sure

I hope I am wrong

Just read your OP again, if the water pump impeller fails it can cause a noise but its more of a grinding noise increasing with the engine revs.

good idea - slacken the fan belt - then remove it - & try engine again

none, it was an MOT re-test. It drove 20miles no bother, guy passed it after walking round it. Then I pulled away and got the knocking

do you mean start the car, with no fan belt (will it start/run?) to rule out the pump and alternator?
