It is worth a check tonight, I guess a compression test will spot that for me, before I strip the head downI've had teh HG blow between just the bores, it sounded just like the big ends had gone (fooled teh RAC guy).

A blown head gasket between 2 cylinders can give a sound very like knocking big ends as craig 1010 said.
The "explosion" from the firing stroke of one cylinder can cause a sudden high pressure "wave" against the neighbouring piston and this shock can cause this kind of noise. It's a bit like very heavy pinking!
A compression check will immediately show if the is a break between two cylinders, so you'll get 2 good readings and then on the affected cylinder pair a poor reading on each of the cylinders.
If this is the case, continuing to run the engine like this will cause a "hot spot" between the cylinders in either/both the engine/block which can render both scrap!
Cheers,
Steve.

I think I've got a head gasket blown, time to strip the top half of the engine to see if I can get this sorted for London to Brighton!

looks alright but will contact a machine shop tomorrow and see if it can be decked, then i am thinking one of those black sticky gaskets, what are they called?good to hear that its not anything more serious and lets hope there no damage to the head or block between the cylinders

You'll be fine even with the cheap gasket on a standard engine.
Just have the cylinder head skimmed a few thou, degrease the deck, and torque up the nuts in increasing settings, 30 then 40 then 50.

suprised you didn't notice a loss in power / poor starting
glad to hear it probably wasn't the ends

Thanks for the advice lads. I will proberbly get what I can get hold of as the work needs doing tonight. Then sheffield to crystal palace to run it inbest stickin with a good quality copper head gasket
car has been stood for 18 months and had trouble starting but that was battery and cold winters mainly. It did appear to just go. I am also very happy it wasn't the big endssounds like fire rings burn't thru / leaking
suprised you didn't notice a loss in power / poor starting
glad to hear it probably wasn't the ends
