W&P made a few for the 50th in 2009, if you use all new parts (a reconditioned engine is allowed) you can register it as a new car on a new registration - The asking price was something over £20k.

Is it £6k these days? That inflation's a dangerous thing. I remember when they were a whisker over £2k, last I looked they were £3.5k/£4k. The shells are only really for reshelling. Building a Mini up as new to be registered as a new car is a different ball game. Might be able to register it as a kit car I suppose and have it on a Q plate, which may negate some of the safety requirements. In fact that may be the only way to do it. Still, the Classic Mini on sale today would be a massive flop, as proven in the 90's before Kia and Hyundai were turning out surprisingly good cars for relatively little cost and 7 years warranty.

If you're curious about how a modern, ultra cheap, ultra simple car will sell in the current market, watch Dacia and see how well they do. Considering every young person seems to buy £12k Corsas on finance now, I reckon no one but a few old dears will buy one.

They Still Issue Q Plates :o I Thought They Stopped In 2005/06 Times.... Kia, Hyundai And Honda Or Should I Say Honda Are Only Popular With Today's Young People Not Because Of The Good Fuel Economy But Bcoz Of The Civic And How Easy It Is To 'Tune'... Kia Hyundai etc Are Well Known For Building Cars With Good Fuel Economy.. But Come To Think Of It, Your Right The Mini Wouldnt Stand A Chance In Today's Society.. The Occasional Doris Or Ethel Might Buy One If It Was Back On The Market :D

60 MPG motoryway driving on the way to the IMM a few years back (between Exeter and Brum)

wasn't really watching the minis MPG but seeing what the campervan would do

it was only when we got back and looked at the petrol used that i worked out the camper was doing 30 MPG and the mini using 1/2 the fuel

I used to get 35 Mpg out of my ERA Turbo on a run but strangely would get 37.5 Mpg when towing the mini trailer behind it! I figured when I was towing the trailer I would go much more carefully and sit at around 50mph.

When running on standard unleaded before rebuild I was pushing 150 miles on every tank so ~ 28MPG. After rebuild I've used exclusively Unleaded Premium to avoid as much biofuel ratio as possible. A very rough figure would be 30MPG, but the engine's still incredibly tight and not nearly run in yet. Also doesn't take into account the increased cost.

Had a string of A+ 998's . All of them would easily produces 50+ figures on a run, even with 13X7's, stage one kits, whatever. Kept them internally standard and well maintained. Obviously enthusiastic driving would dramatically decrease that.
Even my current 998 with a 12G940 head plus other gubbins will still see the better side of 40 mpg on a run if driven normally. And it embarrasses many 1275's (thrash it and you'll see mid 20's)

Worst I got was less than 1 mpg. A full tank gone in less than 2 miles. . . I had a sudden major fuel tank leak and deposited a full tank into the boot, it drained through the boot drain plug all over Broughty Ferry Road in Dundee!
The back seats also got a soaking so we through them away (with the carpets) and drove all the way back to Leeds without them , Well after the AA had patched the tank up.
Actually thats not true. From there we drove to Inverness and then home, but I crashed it into a barrier along the A82 next to loch ness! We were stuck in Fort Augustus for 2 days waiting for a new tyre to fit my 13X7. .Aah, happy days. . Sorry what where we talking about? . .Heck its not as if anyone reads what I post anyway!

Going by my fuel economy speadsheet (yes, i'm that sad), my weighted average over the last 6000 miles had been 46.1 mpg, with my best being 69.1 mpg (sitting behind a lorry on the motorway), and the worst being 19.8 mpg. All from a 1991 998 with minispares stage 1 kit with AAA needle and no further tuning. I would imagine if I had it set up properly on the rollers I could get better than that as well.

Going to download a fuel tracker things on my phone and keep regular checks,

Car is running less that brilliant as well so i was very suprised with that figure.

Would love to get it to 60mpg

I get an average of 36mpg - '97 Cooper MPi with a K&N, Maniflow exhaust but otherwise standard. It's a 30mile a day roundtrip with a mixture of country roads and dual carriageways (normally no faster than 65mph).

I thought that was good but looking at the other figures it doesn't seem so great.

Worst was not fuel but oil: 55mile trip back from Cambridge used 7litres of oil!!!! >_<
