Hi again,

So yesterday I changed my timing chain. After I finished I realized I forgot to bend the lock tab back on the cam sprocket.

So I was just going to quickly strip it all down again and do it.

% mins into it I'm already stuck

I've taken off the starter motor so i can lock the ring gear with a screw driver, but the crank is still turning. I've put it in gear as well as locking the ring gear but it is just having none of it!!!

HELP!!!

i can lock the ring gear with a screw driver, but the crank is still turning.

So the flywheel is not bolted securely to the crank either !

you need to get the flywheel bolted back on to the crank...

but you dont nees a special tool to lock the flywheel!!  an old big end or main bearing does the job fantastically!! just jam an end in the ring gear, exess pointing the way you will end up turning the flywheel depending on if you are undoing or doing it up!!

But I just used a screw driver. The starter gear isn't moving but the crank is...

Then as said above either the ring gear or the complete flywheel is loose.  It's unlikely to be the ring gear normally!  Are you sure the crank is turning and it's not just the bolt and pulley moving as one or something silly like that?  Did you fit the woodruf key?

Yeah I fit the woodruff key. I can hear something that sounds like the crank is slipping. And i'm pretty sure the pistons are sucking in air.

Do I need to take off the clutch housing then?

>_< Damn it!!

Any advice for doing that?

I tried to remove the clutch housing on my last mini, and just couldn't get it off!

you may find it easier remove the engine considering you are doing work at both ends.

You can get at everything a lot easier...its not actually that big a job.

If you do decide to do it in pace then it's just the cover you need to remove, not the whole housing.  Get an 11mm or 7/16" ratchet spanner (11mm will be far easier to find and they are so close to the same size that it doesn't matter in this case) and bend it slightly across the end about 1 1/2" back from the ratchet section.  This will be great for the two screws that are almost inaccessible.  When refitting the cover, you can cut these two positions out into slots so you don't need to actually completely remove these two screws.

Was the engine running beforehand? If so, then you have to question how the flywheel became loose, and if it has been run like that, what damage may have been caused it being loose?

Yeah doing it in situe. I disconnected all the mounts etc and jacked the engine up to get to the lower bolts.

Nice idea about cutting the slots! Will defo do that before i re-fit everything.  :proud:

Yeah it was running fine apart from the rattling which made me change the timing chain. I was getting some juddering though as well. For example doing 30 in 3rd gear felt like I was driving along rumble strips....

So I took the clutch cover off to find the fly wheel bolt totally loose. Not even hand tight. The same as the crank pulley was when I took it off yesterday.

I took the fly wheel bolt out to inspect it before tightening it up. When I did the keyway locating plate fell out in 2 parts with the raised part all knarled up! So god knows what was going on there! At least I came across the problem in my car park and not on the motorway this weekend!!

Although that's another mark in my girlfriend's black book because we won't be able to go away now  >_<  >_<
